 Infineum D3420 development provides new mixed


fleet technology meeting key performance levels,

 MB p228.3, MB p229.1, MAN M3275

 Caterpillar ECF-1

 Matrix core and various base oil interchange


extensions have been completed which has
expanded base stock coverage.

What is API CI-4 & why Infineum?

 API CI-4 is the new North American HDD specification designed


to provide lubricants which meet the requirements of engines fitted
with EGR (exhaust gas recirculation)

 EGR leads to increased soot loadings and increased acid. API CI-4
oils therefore require
 Improved dispersancy
 Greater protection against soot induced wear
 More effective use of TBN to neutralise extra acid
 Increased anti-oxidancy capability

 Infineum has been in the lead in the development of this new


lubricant quality, both in the industry committees and in delivering
cost effective technology to the customer

What is Volvo VDS-3
 VDS-3 was introduced in 2000 as an additional quality level above VDS-2
 Designed for long drain application in Euro III engines
 Severe test of the lubricant
 Test length 300,000 km
 Oil drain interval 100,000 km (75,000 km for loads > 44T)
 Engine inspected at end of test, key parameters rated
 Pistons cleanliness (merit rating according to Volvo rating system)
 Bore polish
 Bearing wear (main and big end)
 Valve deposits
 Valve cover and oil pan sludge
 Ring wear
 Used oil analysis also considered
 End of test limits for TBN and viscosity
 Wear metals must show no unusual values throughout the test
 3 trucks run in test, results from 2 can be used to obtain acceptance if the results
are very good, otherwise third truck results are required for confirmation

Infineum D3420: Performance Features
 Key drivers for the development were the advent of
API CI-4 and the earlier upgrade of the ACEA E
specifications.

 The technology uses phenate & sulphonate


detergents and is formulated for improved
antioxidancy, soot handling and performance at
extended drain under severe EGR conditions.

 The products, at 14.1 - 16.0 % m treat (ACEA E5,


API CI-4 level), provide 10 TBN and 1.2% m
Sulphated Ash.
