Practices and NDT

special for MUHK
Building Services, Construction & Safety Stream
http://www2.ic.polyu.edu.hk/bcu/
Objectives
> This module aims to provide students the holistic
knowledge on actual work sequences and methods in the
construction industry by means of participating in practical
construction work.
> This module also provides students the opportunity to
apply various building techniques, skills and up-to-date
engineering tools to recognize the building process as
well as outline some commonly used testing methods for
quality assurance.
Intended Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of this module, students will be able to:
a) identify good practices and workmanship for major
trades in building projects;
b) describe actual work sequences and methods in major
builder’s work;
c) explain the technology impacts on equipment, materials
and work methods to keep abreast of technology
development and building practices and
d) apply Nondestructive Testing (NDT) techniques in
building’s defects diagnosis.
Module Synopsis
a) Concepts:
• Building skills;
• Trades tools;
• Characteristics and properties of building materials;
• Materials preparation;
• Understanding of construction drawings;
• Measurement and setting out techniques;
• Fabrication process;
• Good site practices.
Module Synopsis
b) Major Builder’s Work:
• Bricklaying practice;
• Concrete mixing process;
• Site inspection on fixed bars;
• Fabrication of timber formwork;
• Erection of simple scaffolding;
• Appreciation of welding tests;
• Pipe fitting and jointing methods practice.
Module Synopsis
c) Technology impacts:
• The methods of constructing the various types of wall
and slab;
• Various structures in formwork, concrete, steels and
scaffolds such as lightweight block, types of steel
bars, cutting and jointing equipment, etc.
Module Synopsis
d) Building’s defects diagnosis:
• Carbonation Test,
• Rebound Hammer Test,
• Covermeter and Rebar Location Inspection,
• Half-cell Potential Test,
• Infrared Thermographic Survey, and
• Ultrasonic Test.
Teaching/Learning Methodology
> Mini-lectures focus on the introduction and explanation of
key concepts, with specific reference to current
construction industry wherever appropriate.
> Demonstrations will be conducted to show to students the
commonly used building skills and equipment employed
for construction industry.
> Different hands-on activities will be used to let students to
learn the skills taught in demonstrations, and also to apply
the technologies and knowledge delivered in mini-lectures.

.
 It must be in your own hand-writing.
 The Report should be technical in nature, with, where appropriate,
sketches, diagrams, or charts to aid your presentation.
 You are required to submit the Module Component Report within one
week after completing the training module. Reports should be submitted
(by group) to your workshop supervisor via your group representative.
 The Maximum grade of late submission and resubmission would be D.
 Normally a mark grade from A+ to F will be given.

Assessment Methods
Assessment Methods Weighting (%) Arrangement
THREE assignments will be conducted in the
Assignments 40 “Concrete”, “Welding” and “Plumbing
Practices” workshops.
ONE test (overall) will be held at the last
Test 30 lesson.
ONE report (overall) has to be submitted
Report 30 within one week after completing the
training module.
Total 100
• 100% attendance is expected.

• Workshop assignments in the form of practical activities and worksheets will be used to assess how well students
understand the working principle, capabilities, and operation of builders’ work.
• Multiple-choice quizzes will be used to broadly assess the students’ understanding of declarative knowledge covered by the
module.
• Individual module report (overall) will be used to assess holistically how well the students understand and consolidate the
technical contents. The students also elaborate on their professional attitude and commitment in their writing.
