HEMOPHILIA - A BLEEDING

DISORDER
By Viprav Chawla
Roll no. 28
Hemophilia is a disorder in which
the blood does not clot properly,

WHAT IS
leading to excess blood loss. It is
generally genetically inherited, but

HEMOPHILIA? can also be caused by a mutation in

the genes which control and
regulate the development of
clotting factors.
WHAT DOES IT MEAN?
● People with Hemophilia bleed longer, not faster.
HOW RARE IS IT?
● It happens in 1 out of 10,000 live male births in India.
● Race or socioeconomic factors do not affect the incidence of this disorder.
● Females carry the genes, but males are affected.
● 30% of all cases are due to genetic mutations.
● Males are more prone to inherit the disorder, but females can inherit it too.
HOW IS IT INHERITED?
HOW DOES IT AFFECT THE BODY?
Hemophilia can result in:-
● Bleeding within joints that can lead to chronic joint disease and pain.
● Bleeding in the head and sometimes in the brain can cause long term problems
such as seizures and paralysis. Bleeding in the brain can also be fatal.
● Internal bleeding can damage your organs and tissues, which can become life-
threatening.
● It causes mobility problems, chronic pains, unexpected bleeding, pain, crippling
disabilities and uncertainties in daily life. Some cases also lead to hematomas.
The only way Hemophilia can be
treated is by a method called
Replacement Therapy;
HOW IS IT Concentrates of clotting factors are

TREATED? slowly dripped or injected into a

vein.

There is no cure for Hemophilia as

of now.
HOW TO TAKE CARE OF YOURSELF IF YOU HAVE
HEMOPHILIA
To avoid excessive bleeding and to protect your joints;
● Exercise regularly; it builds better muscles, protecting your joints.
● Avoid certain pain medications; aspirin and ibuprofen can worsen bleeding.
● Avoid blood-thinning medications; heparin, rivaroxaban and other such medications
prevent blood from clotting.
● Practice good dental hygiene; tooth and gum disease can lead to excessive bleeding.
● Get vaccinations; use of the smallest gauge needle and applying pressure or ice for
3-5 minutes after injection can reduce the risk of bleeding.
● Protect yourself from injuries which can cause bleeding; knee pads, elbow pads,
helmets and safety belts can protect from such injuries. Keep your home furniture
free from sharp corners.
