What is a stimulant?
Stimulant

Stimulants are a class of drugs that speed up messages travelling


between the brain and body. They can make a person feel more
awake, alert, confident or energetic.
Types of stimulants

● Amphetamine
● Ephedrine
● Caffeine
Amphetamine

Amphetamine is a strong central nervous system stimulant


that is used in the treatment of attention deficit hyperactivity
disorder, narcolepsy, and obesity.
Ephedrine

Ephedrine is a central nervous system (CNS) stimulant that


is often used to prevent low blood pressure during
anesthesia.
Caffeine

Caffeine is a drug that stimulates (increases the activity of) your


brain and nervous system. Caffeine is found in many drinks such
as coffee, tea, soft drinks and energy drinks.
Cause and Effects of stimulants
Causes of stimulants:
● Being exposed to stimulant substances.
● Exposure to violence or crime.
● Ease to accessibility to obtaining the substance.
● Personal or family history of mental health conditions.
● Being chronically subjected to high levels of stress.
Effects of stimulants:

● Sense of exhilaration.
● Enhanced self-esteem.
● Increased physical activity.
● Appetite reduction.
● Extended wakefulness.
