AIR POLLUTION

Claudia Román Cuartero

WHAT IS AIR POLUTION?
◦ Air pollution is caused by releasing gases into
the atmosphere. These gases may be made
when fuels are burned or may be used in
manufacturing. Many of the effects of air
pollution have global implications.
CARBON MONOXIDE (CO)
WHAT IS CO?
CO is a colorless, odorless gas that can be harmful when inhaled in large amounts. CO is released when
something is burned with enough air supply.
CARBON MONOXIDE (CO)
WHERE IS IT PRODUCED?
Higher levels of CO generally occur in areas with heavy
traffic congestion. However, most modern cars are fitted with
catalytic converters that turn the carbon monoxide into carbon
dioxide, decreasing the amount of CO that is released into the
atmosphere.
Other sources of CO emissions include industrial processes,
residential wood burning, and natural sources such as forest
fires.
The highest levels of CO typically occur during the colder
months of the year when inversion conditions are more
frequent.
CARBON MONOXIDE (CO)
WHAT ARE THE HARMFUL EFFECTS OF CO?
◦ Carbon monoxide is an extremely poisonous gas as it combines with haemoglobin in blood and reduces
the amount of oxygen that can be transported in the blood stream to critical organs like the heart and
brain.
SIMPTOMS OF CARBON MONOXIDE POISONING
ACID RAIN
◦ FORMATION OF ACID RAIN
Burning fossil fuels releases harmfull gases like CO2 and
sulfur dioxide (comes from sulfur impurities in the fossil
fuels)

SO2 mixes with rain clouds and forms dilute sulfuric acid

Then this falls as acid rain

ACID RAIN EFFECTS
FISH TREES
Acid rain cause lakes to become more acid.  As the Acid rain also removes minerals and nutrients from the
acidity of a lake increases, the water becomes soil that trees need to grow. At high elevations, acidic fog
clearer and the numbers of fish and other water and clouds might strip nutrients from trees' foliage,
animals decline. leaving them with brown or dead leaves and needles
