ORIGIN OF TIHAR
The actual origin of Tihar is not well documented but we
Nepalese believe that ,
 Yamraj {who was the god of death} was away from his
sister Yamuna(holy river) for long time .
 Yamuna wanted to meet yamraj that’s why she sent Crow
Dog and a Cow to give her message to yamraj that she
wanted to meet him but there was no response from him.
 Then after she went to visit her brother yamraj.
 After she reached there  Yamuna made a circle with
mustard oil and Dubo Grass and put Makhmali Mala and
asked Yamaraj not to go till the oil, Dubo Grass and the
flower gets dry and she worshipped her brother with 5
rangin tikas, fruits and flowers. Therefore, every sister
worships her brother keeping him in the circle of mustard
oil, putting mala (garland) of Makhmali flower and Dubo
