Unpacking The Theme
What does it mean to you?

Prefect Training 2019

“Tomorrow’s
Leaders Begin
Today”
• You must become a leader.
• No one is “born” a leader.

• Becoming a leader is a process.

• Becoming a leader is intentional.

Prefect Training 2019 4

What is a “leader?”

Prefect Training 2019 5

A Leader.

Prefect Training 2019 6

Leadership
• “Leadership is a process of social influence, which maximizes the
efforts of others, towards the achievement of a goal”
• Leadership ≠ power and authority.
• The badge does not automatically make you a leader.

Prefect Training 2019 7

What makes a leader?
• Self-awareness.
• Teachable/Open to criticism (critique).
• Able to handle negative criticism.
• Able to handle disappointment/failure.
• Team-player.

Self-Awareness

Prefect Training 2019 10

Self-Awareness
• The “conscious knowledge of one’s own character, feelings, motives
and desires.”
• How can you influence others towards a purpose if you don’t know
what your own purpose is?
• Knowing your purpose comes with self-awareness.

• You can’t influence others towards a goal unless you first know how
you influence people.
• Directly – what are my strengths? How can I use these strengths to influence
people?
• Indirectly – are there certain traits that I have that draw people towards me?
Are there any that would alienate others?

• Self-awareness helps you to establish boundaries.

Prefect Training 2019 11

Self-Awareness

• “Prefect” = Scrutiny
• Members of staff.
• Younger students will
view you as role models.
• Members of the public.
• Envious peers.

• Helps to regulate your

behaviour.

• Storytime – 6th form

pavilion.
“You int supposed to be a Prefect?”

Prefect Training 2019 12

Ways to Cultivate Self-Awareness
1. Introspection - “why do I do the things that I do? How do others
respond? How do I respond to others? Why do I react to certain
things the way I do?”
2. Gather feedback from people that you trust.
3. Consider the circumstances – are there any situations that you
frequently find yourself in? How do you react when you are in
these situations? Do you think that you play a role in getting
yourself into certain situations?

Prefect Training 2019 13

Teachable/Open to
Criticism(Critique)

Prefect Training 2019 14

Teachable/Open to Criticism
• Leadership ≠ Perfection.
• Making mistakes is a part of the process.

• Leadership comes with a spotlight.

• People will express their opinions on your leadership.

• Not everybody’s a hater.

• Not necessarily attacking you, but trying to help you.

• IMPORTANT! - Have trustworthy people in your circle that have your best
interests at heart.
• E.g. Ms. Sealy!
• Can you think of anyone in your life that serves this purpose?

• However, not everyone giving a critique will have your best interests at
heart…

Ability to Handle
Negative Criticism
• Not everyone will be receptive of you
and your leadership.
• What they say about you does not
define you as a leader or a person.
• If it’s the case that you genuinely made
a mistake, then learn from that
mistake!
• Mistakes are what make us human.
• Story time – UWI STAT Lecture

Prefect Training 2019 17

Handling
Disappointments/Failure

Prefect Training 2019 18

Handling
Disappointments/Failure
• How we handle disappointment is within our control.

• How NOT to handle disappointment:

• Underachieving – intentionally lowering your efforts and
avoiding taking risks.
• Disappointment can teach you a lesson. However, you
are not going to learn that lesson if you lower your
effort and avoid taking risks.
• You can lose out on opportunities.
• Example – the opportunity I declined in 6th form.
• Self-blaming – thinking that the disappointment is all your
fault.
“Far too many people, when faced with disappointment, tend to
attribute negative life events to their personal failings. They
resort to obsessional self-blaming, as they feel ashamed or
humiliated of not measuring up to the image of their ideal self. As 19
a result, they direct their anger inward, to themselves.”
How to Handle Disappointment
• Learn from it.

“Disappointment is not meant to destroy us. If taken in stride, it can

strengthen us and make us better. In spite of its devastating emotional
impact, we may even consider encounters with disappointment as
journeys toward greater insight and wisdom.”

Prefect Training 2019 20

How to Handle Disappointment
1. Understand the disappointment – did the situation fall within my
control, or was it beyond it?
• If within control, be honest yourself without going into the territory of self-
blaming.

2. Deal with the emotions – acknowledge how you’re feeling.

• Pinpoint how you’re feeling, why you’re feeling this way, and what you can do
to mitigate those feelings (e.g. channel it into something productive, talking
to someone about it).
• However, if you wallow in negative feelings for too long, you won’t learn from
the disappointment.

3. Forgive yourself – “Kicking yourself over past failures won’t

change what happened, it will just leave you sore from being
kicked so much.”
