BASIC TECHNOLOGY

MATERIALS AND THEIR COMMON USES

(METALS)
LEARNING OBJECTIVES
• compare ferrous and non-ferrous metals;
• explain the composition of alloys of metals;
• figure out the uses of metals.
PRE-READING TEST
Metals are common materials around us,
compare the material with wood/timber in
terms of rusting, porosity to water, strength,
cost and malleability.
FERROUS METALS
NON-FERROUS METALS
CLASS ACTIVITY 1
In each group critically examine the specimen given and test each of them with magnet.

Report the following concerning each specimen

1) Type of metal
2) Properties
3) Colour
4) Uses
Metals, its production and its alloys
Metal Alloys
These are metals obtained when two or more metals are mixed together.
TYPES
Ferrous alloys.
1) Nichrome for wires and electronic
2) Stainless steel for cups and plates

Non-ferrous alloys
1) Brass for bullets and electrical appliances
2) Duralumin f aircraft body parts, doors, window frames ships etc.).
3) Bronze for gears, statues, plaques, statues

CLASS ACTIVITY 2
Name the specific metal material you would use to make the following items and describe the reason why you chose those materials.
1)Electric cable
2)Car engine
3)Cooking pot
4)Reinforcement bar
ASSIGNMENT
1. At home, identify five items made of metals, test
them with magnet and report the type of metals
used to produce them.
2. Create a table to represent 6 examples of metals
and their uses.
