Problem of the Day

Complete the expression using the
numbers 3, 4, and 5 so that it equals 19.

4 + 5  3
or 4 + 3  5

Course 2
7-2 OBJECTIVES:

Learn to find the mean, median, mode,

and range of a data set.

Course 2
7-2 Mean, Median, Mode, and Range
Helpful Hint
The mean is the sum of the data The mean is
values divided by the number of sometimes called
data items. the average.
The median is the middle value of an odd number
of data items arranged in order. For an even
number of data items, the median is the average
of the two middle values.

The mode is the value or values that occur most

often. When all the data values occur the same
number of times, there is no mode.

The range of a set of data is the difference

between the greatest and least values. It is used
to show the spread of the data in a data set.

Course 2
7-2 Mean, Median, Mode, and Range
Additional Example 1: Finding the Mean, Median,
Mode, and Range of Data

Find the mean, median, mode, and range of the data set.
4, 7, 8, 2, 1, 2, 4, 2

mean:
4 + 7 + 8 + 2 + 1 + 2 + 4 + 2 = 30 Add the values.

8 items sum
Divide the sum by the
30  8 = 3.75 number of items.

The mean is 3.75.

Course 2
7-2 Mean, Median, Mode, and Range
Additional Example 1 Continued

Find the mean, median, mode, and range of the data set.
4, 7, 8, 2, 1, 2, 4, 2

median:
1, 2, 2, 2, 4, 4, 7, 8 Arrange the values in order.

2+4=6 There are two middle values, so

find the mean of these two values.
62=3

The median is 3.

Course 2
7-2 Mean, Median, Mode, and Range
Additional Example 1 Continued

Find the mean, median, mode, and range of the data set.
4, 7, 8, 2, 1, 2, 4, 2

mode:
1, 2, 2, 2, 4, 4, 7, 8 The value 2 occurs three times.

The mode is 2.

Course 2
7-2 Mean, Median, Mode, and Range
Additional Example 1 Continued

Find the mean, median, mode, and range of the data set.
4, 7, 8, 2, 1, 2, 4, 2

range:
1, 2, 2, 2, 4, 4, 7, 8 Subtract the least value
from the greatest value.

8– 1 = 7

The range is 7.

Course 2
7-2 Mean, Median, Mode, and Range
Check It Out: Example 1

Find the mean, median, mode, and range of the data set.
6, 4, 3, 5, 2, 5, 1, 8

mean:
6 + 4 + 3 + 5 + 2 + 5 + 1 + 8 = 34 Add the values.

8 items sum

34  8 = 4.25 Divide the sum

by the number of items.
The mean is 4.25.

Course 2
7-2 Mean, Median, Mode, and Range
Check It Out: Example 1 Continued

Find the mean, median, mode, and range of the data set.
6, 4, 3, 5, 2, 5, 1, 8

median:
1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 5, 6, 8 Arrange the values in order.

4+5=9 There are two middle values, so find

the mean of these two values.
9  2 = 4.5

The median is 4.5.

6, 4, 3, 5, 2, 5, 1, 8

mode:
1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 5, 6, 8 The value 5 occurs two times.

The mode is 5.

from the greatest value.

8– 1 = 7

The range is 7.

Course 2
IN SUMMARY,
Arithmetic mean is the total of the sum
of all values in a collection of numbers
divided by the number of numbers in a
collection. It is calculated in the
following way:
Ungrouped It is data obtained in original / raw
data form.

Example
Marks obtained by 22 students in Science exam are as
follows:

80, 72, 80, 75, 60, 40, 60, 44, 45, 47, 62, 46, 42, 42,
41,50, 51, 72, 73, 84, 87, 85
2. The mean age of five boys is 16 years. If the ages
of four of them be 15 years, 18 years, 14 years and
19 years then find the age of the fifth boy.

Solution:

Let the age of the fifth boy be x years.

Therefore,
the age of
the fifth boy
is 14 years.
