Nature and Function


Nature
 Counseling is inseparable from guidance.

 Giving
assistance that will lead to a change in
behavior or attitude.

 Creation
of a wholesome relationship between
the counselor and counselee.

A collaborative process
Functions
 Counselor facilitates the counselee in
knowing how to face his own
difficulty.

 Counselorcan possibly prevent the


development of a problem into a more
complicated one.
Things to consider:
 It should be done in a place where there is
privacy and conducive for the counselee to
cry, shout, and air whatever he wants t
unburden.

 Counselor should have the proper attitude.


 Has genuine interest, willing to listen and

exhibit sincerity in providing help.

 Respect must be observed all the time.


 Relationship must be one of openness, trust,
and warmth.

 Rapport must be maintained throughout the


entire process. There must be a comfortable
feeling of mutual confidence.

 Counselee must be free to unburden himself


of his feelings, anxieties and inadequacies.
 Listening is very important..
Phases of Counseling
 Counseling is not just attained in just one
setting. It follow several phases:

1. The exploratory phase


- counselor shows his willingness to share
his time for counseling. She has to
establish rapport.
2. Introductory phase
 Feeling one’s way is done. Both the counselor
and counselor size up how and where to
begin.

 Learning about the symptoms and setting


into counselee a picture of himself with his
words and movement are also done here
3. Interpretative phase
 Counselor tries to study facts presented to
him/her.

 Ask about what the counselee wants and how


he looks at the problem.
4. Working phase
 Counselee is led to see himself clearly; takes
and weighs options for solution and is guided
freely to make own assessment, choice, and
decision.


5. Terminating Phase
 Which is when the counselee feels certain and
sure of a workable solution.
