HAITI

EARTHQUA
KE
By Christopher Oancea
HOW DID THE NATURAL
DISASTER HAPPEN
The earthquake happened at the fault line that runs along the North
America plate and the Caribbean plate. This is what you call a
transform fault , where the two plates move past one another. The
plates moves around 2cm each year.
CONVENTION CURRENTS
The convention currents happen down in the
mantle , the mantle creates convention
currents. These convention currents move
plates. The movement of plates is called
plate tectonics. In are case we have the
North American plate and the Caribbean
plate which move 2 cm each year this
causes both plates to rubbing against each
other this is called a Subduction where the
plates slip under one another and eventually
lead to an earth quake

SUBDUCTION

Subduction is when one tectonic plate moves

under another Tectonic plate and when this
happens an earthquake occurs  because of
the pressure that is provided form the plates
colliding with one another the plates are
being pushed down by gravity and its pushed
further down into the mantle layer of the
earth . Subduction occurs very slowly.
Geologists have identified that the average
rate of convergence is between 2 an 8
centimeters per year. This is slow  enough
that the subduction often goes unnoticed, a
tectonic plates can be either a oceanic or
continental plate. The act of subduction only
happens to oceanic plates.
WHAT CAUSED THE PLATES TO MOVE ?

The plates gradually got closer together because of convention

currents the act of Subduction caused the earthquake because
pressure  which has been locked in for over 250 year was let out
and eventually the crust ruptured and all the energy which has built
up for all these years was let out in the form of seismic waves .
WHAT WAS THE
DEPTH OF THE
FOCUS ?

The focus of
the Hiati earthquake was 10KM
deep so the seismic energy was
released very close to
the earths surface which
created a series of shocks.
THE CITIES WHICH WERE
EFFECTED
The city of Port-au-Prince suffered
over 300,000 deaths because of their
poor living conditions the city has
more than 70% of citizens living in
shanty towns and badly constructed
buildings  and because of this a lot of
the people who died were crushed
beneath the rubble which the building
left behind.
NATURAL DISASTER
EFFECTS
• Nearly 4,000 schools were damaged or
destroyed.
• More than $16 billion in total aid was
allocated by international agencies and
private donors to Haiti for 2010 to 2020.
• Some of the issues Haiti faced prior to the
earthquake persist today, including weak
political governance, lack of infrastructure,
and limited access to basic resources.
HOW TO PREVENT DISASTERS

We can prevent disasters from happening by :

- Moving the haiti citizens from the buildings nearby onto a plain
field, so that nothing collapses on top of them.
- Stronger buildings
- Warning people, so that they know that the earthquake is going to
happen
We can also spread the construction of houses.
