From
The Dhammapada
Verse 60
During the Buddha’s time, the
Kingdom of Kosala was ruled by
King Pasenadi.
One day, while surveying the city, he
happened to see a beautiful girl.
The king instantly fell in love with
her.
Back in the palace, the king could
not forget her. He found out from his
servants, that she was already
married.

2
In order to see the woman more often,
the king summoned her and her husband
to work as servants and live at the
palace.
Each day, the sight of the woman made
the king’s lust grow.
On the other hand, the sight of her
husband made him burn with envy and
hatred. The king devised a way to get rid
of the husband. He decided to send the
husband off on an impossible mission.

The husband was tasked with retrieving
treasures that only exist deep underwater:
rare lotus flowers and red earth. The
punishment for failure was death if he could
not fulfill his task within the day.
The wife was worried sick. She prepared a
food pack for her husband and gave it to him
as he left for his mission. Along the way, the
man came across a fellow traveler who was
down on his luck. Feeling compassionate, he
shared half of his meager meal and continued
on his mission.
4
When he arrived at the river, he ate
some of his meal and shared the rest
with the fish. It was at this point that
he decided to ask a final favor.
“O Spirits, I had made merits by
sharing my meal with a traveler and
with fish.
I now share the merits of my charity
with you. May you repay my good
deeds by helping me on my mission.”
5
Hearing his dedication, a
supernatural being in that area
brought the lotus flowers and red
earth and placed them beside him.
Back at the palace, the king began
to fear that the husband would find
a way to complete his mission and
come back on time. So, he
commanded the soldiers to close
the palace gates.

6
The soldiers were confused because
the palace gates usually remained
open until after sundown. The king
ordered them to ignore all requests to
open the gates.
When the husband arrived back at the
palace, he saw the gates closed. He
announced that he had finished his
mission. Seeing that the guards would
not respond, he placed the items in
front of the gates.
7
Fearing for his life, he left for the Jetavana
monastery in search of shelter and
protection.
That night, the king could not sleep.
Crazed with desire, he thought of ways to
get rid of the husband.
During the middle of the night, he began to
hear eerie noises. The king was frightened
and confused. He sought counsel from his
wife Queen Mallika. And she advised him
to ask the Buddha about the sounds.
Jetavana
8
At the Jetavana monastery, the king asked the Buddha about the
eerie noises. Buddha explained that the sounds came from four
men who were suffering in hell. They had previously been born
humans and committed sexual misconduct. Now in hell, they
spent their days climbing a thorny tree trying to escape the hot
fires below.

9
But if they climbed too high, they would have their eyes
pecked by vicious birds.
After hearing the state the four adulterous men were in, the
king became terrified about the Karma of his own actions.
Then the king realized how serious his fault was and the
severity of the punishment.

10
King Pasenadi thought :"After all, it
was because of my intense desire for
another man's wife that I was
tormented and could not sleep the
whole of last night". Then King
Pasenadi said to the Buddha:
"Venerable Sir, now I know how long
the night is for one who cannot sleep."

So he abandoned the thought of

wanting another man's wife.

11
The young man who was sent on
the task to fetch the rare lotus and
the red earth told The Blessed
One, "Venerable Sir, because I had
traveled the full distance of a
yojana (12 miles) yesterday, I, too,
know how long the journey of a
yojana is to one who is weary.“

12
Combining the 2 statements by the king and the young man, the Buddha
spoke on Verse 60 of The Dhammapada.
“Long is the night to the one who can’t sleep;
a journey is long to the weary; Long is
saṃsāra (cycle of rebirths) to those
spiritually immature who do not know the
Dhamma (the teaching of Buddha). At the
end of the discourse, the young man attained
Sotapatti Fruition (first stage of
enlightenment).”
Dhammapada Verse 60
