BALLADE- in classical music since the late 18th century,


refers to a setting of a literary ballad, a narrative poem, in
the musical tradition of the Lied, or to a one-movement
instrumental piece with lyrical and dramatic narrative
qualities reminiscent of such a song setting, especially a
piano ballade

ETUDE- The Études by Frédéric Chopin are three sets of


études for the piano published during the 1830s. There are
twenty-seven compositions overall, comprising two

MAZURKA- are general terms for a series of Polish folk


dances in triple meter, which originated in the plains of
Mazovia around Warsaw. The people of the province were
called Mazurs; thus, the dance mazur bears the same
name as the male inhabitant of the region.

The Polonaise is a stately Polish processional dance,


performed by couples who walk around the dance hall;
the music is in triple meter and moderate tempo.

A Prelude is a piece of music that traditionally leads into


something else, common examples from the Baroque
period being a fugue or a suite of dances. Since the early
19th century a Prelude has more generally indicated a
short character piece, often with an improvisatory quality

the 3/4 time signature. Popular in Austrian, German, and
