The following ppt involves the
analysis of 5 different types of
gating systems used in casting. An

component is chosen as the part to
be cast. A Computer Aided design
of the model is prepared for
analysis.
The objectives include the use of five
different gating systems to study and
analyze the defects that are taking
place within a particular design.

The five different gating systems

include:

OBJECTIVE 1.Top gate

2.Bottom gate

3.Parting line gate

4.Step gate

5.Whirl gate
Carbon Steel A7075

● It is used for casting of Automotive pistons.

● Density of metal used: 7870 kg/m3
● Weight of the component being casted: 0.4687 kg
● Melting temperature of the metal: 1425 K
● Pouring Temperature: 1900.24 K
Impact of gating system on mechanical properties
One of the most important mechanical properties affected by the gating system is the porosity of the casting. Porosity is the

presence of small voids or pores in the casting, which can weaken it and make it more susceptible to failure. A poorly

designed gating system can cause the metal to solidify too quickly or too slowly, leading to the formation of porosity.

The gating system can also affect the casting grain structure. The grain structure of a casting refers to the arrangement of

its metallic crystals. A well-designed gating system can promote the formation of a fine, uniform grain structure, which can

enhance the casting's strength and toughness. On the other hand, a poorly designed gating system can lead to the formation

of a coarse or uneven grain structure, which can weaken the casting.

In addition, the gating system can affect the casting
cooling rate, which can in turn affect its mechanical
properties. A gating system that promotes a slower
cooling rate can lead to the formation of larger and
more uniform grains, which can improve the casting's
mechanical properties.

Overall, the gating system is an important factor that

can significantly impact the mechanical properties of a
casting. To ensure that a casting meets the required
mechanical properties, it is essential to design and
implement an appropriate gating system.
Steps

The prepared model dimensions are set accordingly and the volume, the weight of
the casting and the density of the metal is taken note.

The casting gating system is prepared in accordance to these calculations. The

modulus of the riser to be used is calculated on the basis of the modulus method.

Rectangular gating systems is designed to reduce the velocity of the molten metal
entering the mould cavity.
Steps

The Taper in the sprue helps to prevent air aspiration in the casting. The metal
leaving out of the sprue is made to fall into the sprue well to reduce the velocity of
the molten metal which otherwise could lead to the erosion of sand mould
beneath the bottom opening of the sprue.

The model is then exported into the Inspire Cast software in .sldprt format.

Each of the 5 gating systems are analysed for defects in the software and all
possible rectifications are made to attain a Final cast product of High quality and
to reduce rejections in casting.

CONCLUSION

Solidification modulus which indicates directional solidification was found to be

the best in parting line gating system and was worst in whirl gating system as riser
was cooling down faster than the mould.

•The porosity was found to be highest in the top gating system, bottom and whirl
had similar porosity level and were bad in comparison to other gating system.

• In case of mould temperature gradient, parting line and step gating system were
found to be Superior in comparison to others.
• Taking the case of pipe shrinkage, shrinkage is occurring only in riser for all the
gating system. • Bottom and step gating system are having higher occurrence of
cold shut, while whirl gating system has the least.

• Comparing all the above parameters it is found that parting line gating system is
the best one to use for minimizing defects.
PARTING LINE GATING SYSTEM

Advantages of a parting line gating system is

that it can help reduce the risk of flow lines,
Solution which can negatively impact the quality of the
final part. Additionally, a parting line gating
system can be used with a wide range of
plastic materials and part geometries, making
it a versatile option for many molding
applications.
1. Easy Removal: Parting line gates are easier to
remove from the molded part since they are
typically thinner than other gating systems.
2. Improved Cycle Time: Parting line gating
system can help to reduce the cycle time since
the gates are closer to the part and the plastic
flows directly into the cavity.
3. Uniform Filling: The parting line gating system
ADVANTAGES OF PARTING provides a balanced filling of the mold, which
ensures uniform filling of the mold cavities,
LINE GATING SYSTEM reducing the risk of short shots or sink marks.
4. Better Mold Cooling: The parting line gating
system allows for better mold cooling since
the gate is located on the parting line, which is
usually the thinnest part of the mold. This
results in faster cycle times and reduced
warpage.
5. Suitable for Complex Parts: Parting line gating
system can be used for complex parts with
intricate geometries, where other gating
systems may not be feasible.
