about electromagnets?
Answer
• -An electromagnet is a temporary
magnet that produces electricity when
there is electric current through a coil
of a wire wrapped around an iron. It
can move pins, and other materials
made of steel or iron. To make the
electromagnet work, there must be
complete circuit through which
electrons can move. When the
connection to a terminal is
disconnected, the electromagnet loses

Experiment
Time!
You Will Need:
• 2 pieces of 2-inch iron nail
• ½ meter copper wire
• 1 piece of big dry cell
• Safety pins or thumbtacks
1.
What to do:
Coil the wire around the nail five (5) times.
2. Attach the ends of the wire to the opposite
ends of one (1) dry cell.
3. Test the electromagnet by placing the nail near
the safety pins/ thumbtacks.
4. Observe what happens. How many safety pins/
thumb tacks did the magnet attract?
What to do:
5. Add another five (5) coils around the nails.
Repeat procedure numbers 2 and 3.
6. Observe what happens. Record the number of
safety pins/ thumb tacks attracted to the magnet.
7. Increase the coils to fifteen (15). Repeat
procedures 2 and 3. Record the number of safety
pins/ thumbtacks that are attached to the magnet.
What to do:
8. This time wind the wire five times more around
the nail. Again, connect the ends of the wire to the
dry cell.
a. How many thumbtacks did the electromagnet
attract?
b. Was there an increase in the number of
thumbtacks attracted by the electromagnet?
What to do:
9. What factor made the electromagnet stronger?
Write the materials that affect the strength of an
electromagnet
What can
electricity do to
improve our
life?
• How the number
of coils affects
the strength of an
electromagnet?
Answer
• - An increase in the number of coils is
proportional to the magnetic field; the
magnetic field will become stronger
because the increased coil has its own
magnetic field, so the more coils more
field lines, and it becomes a stronger
electromagnet.

• How the number
of cells affects
the strength of an
electromagnet?
Answer
• - The current is a big factor in the
strength of the magnetic field. As the
number of batteries increases, the
current increases. So, as the number of
batteries increases, so does the
strength of the electromagnet.
