THE BICOL REGION


The Bicol Region is located in the southernmost
tip of Luzon Island, the largest island in the
Philippine archipelago. 5.9% of the total land
area of the country is in the region. Around
69.3% of the total land area is alienable and
disposable while the remaining 30.7% is public
forest areas.

PHYSICAL ENVIRONMENT

The southeastern volcanic region with Mayon


volcano as the center is known as the BICOL
PENINSULA. The line of volcanoes that make up
the irregular northeast and east ranges includes
from north to south Mt. Isarog, Mt. Iriga, Mt.
Mayon, and Mt. Bulusan. The Peninsula has a
very irregular form with deep and extensive coastal
embayments and a long coastline.

The region has a heavy rainfall throughout the year


and a fertile volcanic soil favorable to the growth of
abaca and coconuts. However, it lies along the path
of destructive typhoons.
