TEN COMMANDMENTS
Introduction
Traditional Understanding:
The 10 Commandments is the law imposed by a divine Judge who watches
over everyone with an all-seeing eye
Eternal punishment is the final end of all transgressors.
It should be followed out of fear.
Proper Understanding:
• Man is created for the law… wrong!: Law is created for man…. right!
• The commandment is a guide and basis of human conduct. It respects
FREEWILL
• It is not entirely God’s punishment but a consequence of one’s act…
• Community’s “BILL OF RIGHTS”:
1. Reverence for God
2. Respect for our fellow human beings
• The 10 Commandments form together a consistent pattern for Christian
Moral Living.
• The 10 Commandments are needed to provide:
1. credible and durable norms
2. a pattern and structure for living according to Christ’s commandment
to love God and neighbor
3. source for relating to non-Christians in moral matters
“I am the Lord your God. You shall not have other gods besides me.”
“You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain.”
“Remember to keep holy the Lord’s day”
“Honor your father and mother”
“You shall not kill”
“You shall not commit adultery”
“You shall not steal.”
“You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor.”
“You shall not covet your neighbor’s wife.”
“You shall not covet thy neighbor’s house or anything else that
belongs to him.”
