INTRODUCTION
•The art of nursing began as woman intuitively
identified and provided for their families health care
needs.

•Nursing as a profession sprouted up as individuals


emerged with desire and ability to nurture others and
provide care for them.
HISTORICAL CONTRIBUTION OF NURSING
1. ANCIENT HISTORY :-
 In Egyptian civilization maternal and child nursing was the
responsibility of midwives ,wet nurses used to breast feed
infants and priests were responsible for the healing practice.
2.NURSING DURING GREEK CIVILIZATION
:-
 Developed assessment standards for clients.
 Medical standards and ethics were established.

 Recognisation of the need for nurses in health care


services.
3.NURSING DURING EARLY CHRISTEN
ERA :-
 The components of nursing practice –
nutrition ,mobility ,medication ,administration ,personal
counseling ,hygiene and comfort measures ,were
established .
4.NURSING DURING MIDDLE AGE :-
 giving shape ,purpose and direction to health care.
 Providing leadership in the field of health care during
epidemics.
 Military nursing came into being.
(a) Nursing in 18th century:-
Industrial revolution and outbreak of epidemics
resulted in expansion of nurses roles.
(b) Nursing during 19th century:-
Emphasis was on improving –
• Societies attitude.
• Image of nursing .
• Preparation of nurses by providing scientific
education .
(c) Nursing during 20th century:-
• Professional nursing organizations established
eg:American Nurse Association, Canadian
Nurses Association ,International Council of
Nurses.
• Nursing journals were published .
• Research conducted on the need for higher
education in nursing .
• Nursing art adopted scientific principles .
