→ Indian rhinos were once spread throughout the entire Indo-Gangetic Plain, but overfishing and agricultural development have
largely reduced their range to 11 regions in northern India and southern Nepal. In the early 1990s, it was estimated that between
1,870 and 1,895 Indian rhinos were alive. [4] Since then, the numbers have increased due to the protection measures taken by
the government. However, poaching remains a constant threat, as more than 150 Indian rhinos were killed by poachers in Assam
between 2000 and 2006 Dec.
→ About 85% of the global Indian rhino population is concentrated in Assam, where Kaziranga National Park contains 70% of the
rhino population.
