Issues faced by girlchild

• women's and children's health is a key priority for healthy

communities. Because women constitute the foundation of

for the success of those around them.
• Rape, trafficking, sexual exploitation, child labor, and
beggary are some of the forms of violence perpetrated on the
girl child. In the absence of gender-disaggregated data on
abuse, exploitation, and violence against girl children, it is

chances of daughters being born. Son preference affects the quantity and quality of children. Son
preference is centuries old and is driven both by economic and cultural factors (Dasgupta 2010).
• Common wisdom is that the preference for sons is motivated by economic, religious, social and
emotional desires and norms that favor males and make females less desirable: Parents
expect sons—but not daughters—to provide financial and emotional care, especially in their old
age; sons add to family wealth and property ...
• “Bringing up a girl is like watering the neighbor’s garden”
• Preference for sons is motivated by economic, religious, social, and emotional desires. Son preference
is an argument of the parent's utility function as well as a result of differential expected
returns. If old-age support comes only from sons, bias continues with growth; however, if both
children can accumulate human capital and girls can provide old-age support, gender bias
decreases with growth
