OPERATION
DESERT
STORM
Operation Desert Storm
 a military campaign conducted by a
coalition of countries
 response to Iraq's invasion of Kuwait in
August 1990.
 Jan. 17 – Feb. 28, 1991 (43 days)
 now commonly known as the Gulf War.
Operation Desert Storm's central objective
or primary goal was to liberate Kuwait
from Iraqi domination.

The effort intended to accomplish this goal

by combining air and ground operations
Air campaign
Aimed to attack major military targets in
Iraq, including:
-- command and control centers
-- air defense systems
--weapons manufacturing facilities
Ground assault
Their goal is to drive Iraqi forces out of
Kuwait and secure the country for its
legitimate government.
Lt Gen. David A.
Deptula
“parallel warfare,”
hitting the enemy
everywhere at once
The operation was successful in its goal of
liberating Kuwait and pushing back the Iraqi
army, which had threatened regional security.
Military plan: Rather than
simply pushing back the
Iraqi army, coalition forces
could have undertaken a
more aggressive strategy
that directly targeted
Saddam Hussein's regime.
Media coverage: To avoid
civilian losses and reduce
the perception of
American hostility in the
region, the US might have
better regulated the
operation's media
coverage.
Coalition-building: The
United States could have
attempted to develop a
stronger coalition with
more regional support to
boost the operation's
credibility and potentially
diminish anti-American
sentiment.
