VERBO TO BE
The verb to be is one of the most chameleonic in English, so its meaning often depends
on the context in which you find it. However, their main meanings are as follows:
Ser
He is smart = Él es inteligente

Estar
It is cold today = Hoy está hacienda frío

Is there anybody inside? = ¿Hay alguien adentro?

Poder (permiso)
Tell her she is not to open the door to strangers = Dile que no puede abrirle la puerta a

BE
Once we know its best-known meanings, we can learn about the most common
uses of this term:
Verbo
It is used to mention an action or state of the subject at any time.
I am Mexican = Soy mexicano.
I was a doctor = Yo era doctor.
• Verbo auxiliar
It is used in the company of other verbs to imply that the actions or states are
taking place at the moment. For this we use the conjugation–ing.
I am still working= Todavía estoy trabajando.
