Survival? Many processes disturb the environment and bring about a lot of changes. Species definitely have to respond or react to these changes in order for them to survive. Failure of organisms to respond to these changes would lead to extinction. As the organisms respond to these changes in the environment, they, too, undergo individual changes. The ability of the organisms to respond to the changes in the environment is known as adaptation. Structural Adaptation – It is also known as physical adaptations are physical features of the body that assist in some way with survival or reproducing. Some examples include having horns to defend against predators and to compete against others. Having camouflage that helps you blend with the environment is also a very useful adaptation to have. It can help to hide from predators who might be looking for food. Structural adaptation of a lot of plants is to have a brightly colored flowers which attracts insects and assist with the pollination process Behavioral Adaptation – Behavioral Adaptation is any activity that is instinctive or, which an organism has learned or has become conditioned of doing, for protection to the environmental change. For example, a opossum plays dead when it spot a predator, birds migrate to other places during winter season to look for a place with the better climate, to hibernate during winter season, and to estivate during summer by large animals Physiological Adaptation - It is the thing that the organism’s body does without necessarily having to consciously tell it to do so. Humans perspire when the environmental temperature gets higher than usual. Sweating is an evaporative cooling system. The skin darkens when we swim and do recreational activities in places exposed to the sun. The darkening of the skin protects the underlying tissue from dehydration
