VISAYAS

VISAYAS is a group of islands in the Central


Philippines, including Cebu, Leyte, Negros,
Panay, Samar, Bohol, and Masbate. Its widely
spoken languages are Waray, Ilonggo and
Cebuano. Despite their numerous languages and
dialects, the people still speak English and Tagalog.
VISAYAS

Visayas is home of many cultural heritages and


breathtaking landscapes, and it houses some of the
attractive and most anticipated religious and
cultural festivals in the country such as Ati-atihan,
Dinagyang, Sinulog, Pintados, Higantes, and
Maskara which are just some of the known and
crowd-drawing festivals in Visayas. Its scenic spots
include the Chocolate Hills in Bohol and the white
sand beaches of Boracay.
VISAYAS
Common literary themes focus on the examination
of human experiences that show the struggles
and defeats in life and how people faced and
triumphed over those adversities. The value of
family life and relationship as they look into the
vital role of family members and relatives as well
as the migration of Filipinos in order to have a
better living are also given importance.

1. CEBU CITY
 The "Queen City of the
South" the economic
center of Central
Philippines.
 The oldest city of the
Philippines
 It was the first Spanish
settlement and the first
capital of the
Philippines.
2. BOHOL
 Known for coral
reefs and unusual
geological
formations, notably
the Chocolate Hills.
3. SAMAR
 Has a different
climate from the rest
of the country, with
a dry period in May
and June only.
4. LEYTE
 is irregular in shape
and has a rugged
mountain backbone,
which reaches its
maximum height at
Mount Lobi.
5. NEGROS
 Is the shaped like a
boot island known
as sugarlandia.
6. PANAY
 The island that has a
huge coastline and a
mountainous,
jungled interior that
has yet to be fully
mapped.
7. MASBATE
 Serves as the
province's main
commercial center
and chief seaport.

HISTORY OF VISAYAS
 The Visayans first encountered 
Western Civilization when Portuguese explorer 
Ferdinand Magellan reached the island of 
Homonhon, Eastern Samar in 1521.[11] The Visayas
became part of the 
Spanish colony of the Philippines and the history of
the Visayans became intertwined with the history
of the Philippines.

LITERATURE
For Contemporary Cebuano Literature, Velasquez
started with a glossary of vocabulary/literary terms.
She discussed the qualities of Cebuano poetry with
examples from prominent Cebuano poets.
CONTEMPORARY CEBUANO LITERATURE

Contemporary Cebuano Poetry is


experimental, becoming short, repetition of
words, use of free verse, use of contemporary
images, and return to concretion. There are
allusions from literature, art, history, myth,
and legend. There is predominance of a
serious yet comical conversational tone or the
other way.
CONTEMPORARY CEBUANO LITERATURE

Contemporary Cebuano Fiction, there


are stories for children, women writing, queer
writing and anthology of Cebuano short
stories which are available in bookstores and
literary organizations.

AUTHOR
FRANCISCO IGNACIO ALZINA SJ was a
Spanish historian and a Jesuit missionary in the
Philippines. He served as parish priest in the
Visayan islands for 37 years. Most of those years
were spent among the natives whom he used to
call "my beloved Bisayans.”

AUTHOR
MARCEL NAVARRA was a Filipino Visayan
editor, poet, and writer from Cebu, Philippines.
He was regarded as the father of modern Cebuano
short story for his use of realism and depictions of
fictionalized version of his hometown, barrio
Tuyom in Carcar, Cebu.
