Moral
The moral of a story is the lesson that
story teaches about how to behave in the
world.
Moral comes from the Latin word mores,
for habits. The moral of a story is
supposed to teach you how to be a better
person. If moral is used as an adjective,
it means good, or ethical. If you have a

m e m b e r o f s o c i e t y.
Examples:

a. The fable "The Grasshopper and the Ant" describes how a

hungry grasshopper begs for food from an ant when winter
comes and is refused. The situation sums up moral lessons
about the virtues of hard work and planning for the future.

b. In the fable "The boy who cried wolf" the moral of the story
is that liars will not be rewarded; even if they tell the truth, no
one believes them.
Symbol
Is anything that stand for, or represents something
else, usually something abstract, such as an idea or
belief. In a story, a character, an action, an object, or
an animal can be symbolic.
Examples:
• In "Alice's Adventures In Wonderland" the garden is a prominent
symbol throughout the story. Fot. Alice, the garden represents an ideal
beauty and perfection thst she glorifies when she first arrives in
Wonderland.

• In the story of Little Red Riding Hood, the wolf represents stranger
danger while the Huntsman represents patriarchal protection and
superiority.

to think of lives as overall trajectories or stories,
as opposedto a summationof smaller events.
Rather than assessing the meaning of lives by
their participationand success in projects,
narrative valuesare used to asses meaning as if the

exhibited in the overall trajectories of someones

“Narrative is not talking “about”
values; rather narrative embodies
and communicates those values.”
