Journal Article:

Methodological Section
• The methodology section or methods section tells you how the
author(s) went about doing their research
• The methodology section should be detailed enough that
another researcher could replicate the study described
A good methodological section should let the readers know:
a. what methods were used to gather data
b. why said methods were chosen
c. what the limitations are to this method.
• When reading the methods section, try to find this information:
• What kind of research method did the authors use?
• Is it an appropriate method for the type of study they are conducting?
• How did the authors get their tests subjects? What criteria did they use?
• What are the contexts of the study that may have affected the results (e.g.
environmental conditions, lab conditions, timing questions, etc.)
• A more detailed look on the method section:
• Specification of (raw) materials and chemicals
• Instrumentations (type of analytical instruments, etc)
• Sampling details
Additional Notes
• Research methods are usually written in passive voices, in past form
• Sometimes to avoid a lengthy explanation, some authors referred their
methods as a standard method (e.g: SNI, Standard Methods), or as a
method proposed by other researchers.
What are the materials being
used in this research?
