Do all rocks look similar?
In what ways can they be different?

◎ We see different kinds

of rocks around us.

◎ They may be different in

color, shape, and size.

2
AIM:
Today, we will be able to
compare rocks based on
different physical properties.
Resources Needed
XSEED Content Book, Worksheet 2

Keywords we will use:

properties, texture, luster

Let’s do this!

◎ Copy the table in your Science notebook.

◎ Look at the picture of the given rock
sample.
◎ Fill in the table with your observations.

5
What are the colors of the rocks?
Which are rough? Smooth? Shiny? Hard? Soft?

◎ Marble and granite come in variety

of colors.

◎ Chalk is white and coal is black.

◎ Granite, chalk, and marble are

smooth while coal is rough.

◎ Marble and granite are shiny and

hard while chalk and coal are dull
and soft.
6
How can we group rocks based on their physical properties?

◎ We can put rocks into groups based on their –

-size
-color
-texture
-luster
-hardness

7
How can we group rocks based on their physical properties?
◎ Rocks are of different colors.

◎ Some are hard whereas some are soft.

◎ Some rocks are rough whereas others are smooth.

◎ Some rocks have a metallic shine or luster while some appear dull.

◎ Rocks also have different abilities to absorb water.

◎ Some rocks like sandstone absorb more water, whereas some rocks like marble do

How are rocks related to their properties?

◎ We use rocks with different
