Wish / If Only

◎ We use wish and if only to talk about things that we


would like to be different in either the present or the
past. If only is usually a bit stronger than wish.

○ In the present

◉ We can use wish/if only + a past form to talk about a present situation
we would like to be different.

● I wish you didn't live so far away.


● If only we knew what to do.
● He wishes he had kids.

◉ We can use either was or were after a singular subject to express wishes:

● I wish I was rich.


● I wish I were rich.

○ In the past

◉ We can use wish/if only + could to talk about things we had


the ability or permission to do.

● They wish they could eat all the chocolate.


● I did not go into the swimming pool. If only I could swim…

○ Expressing annoyance / complaining

◉ We can use wish/if only + wouldn't to complain about what


someone or something does or doesn't do.
◉ We often feel that they are unlikely or unwilling to change.

● I wish you wouldn't borrow my clothes without asking.


● If only my teacher wouldn’t give me so much homework!
● She wishes he wouldn’t work so much. They never spend any time together.
