Formulation
All modal verbs have following features in common :

✔Modal verb tidak pernah di ikuti kata “to”

✔Bentuknya selalu sama untuk semua “pronoun”

✔Modal verb tidak membutuhkan kata bantu (Do, Does, Did dll)
sehingga bentuk negatif dan Pertanyaan hanya perlu menggunakan
modal verb itu sendiri

✔Modal verb satu dengan lainnya tidak pernah digabungkan dalam


satu kalimat

USAGE – “Can”
1. Ability or lack of ability in the present and future
Kemampuan atau Ketidakmampuan pada masa
sekarang dan masa depan

- I can see you at 03:00 p.m. tomorrow. Can you


manage that?

- They can’t (cannot) dance.

2. Giving or not giving permission
Memberi atau tidak memberikan izin

- You can use my office

- You can’t (cannot) smoke here

USAGE – “Could”
1. Ability or lack of ability in the past
Kemampuan atau Ketidakmampuan di masa
lampau / lalu.

- I could read without glasses last year

- I couldn’t (could not) sleep last night

2. Making a request ( always in the question form)
Membuat permintaan (dalam bentuk pertanyaan)

- Could you repeat again, please?

- Could we have a break, please?

3. Making a suggestion (only in the affirmative)
Memberi saran

Wife : what do you suggest we have for dinner?

Husband : we could have fish

USAGE – “May”
1. Asking for permission
Meminta Izin

- May I use your pen?


- May we have a look ?
- May I borrow your note book?

Note : giving permission we can use “can”

2. A strong possibility in the present or the
future.
Kemungkinan yang kuat yang terjadi masa
yang akan datang

- It may happen again

- She may not accept the offer

USAGE – “might”
1. A possibility in the present or the future
Kemungkinan dimasa sekarang dan depan

- It might happen again. (it could happen


again)

- She might not accept the offer.

2. A posibility in the past (followed by “have+done or Verb 3” )

- He might have missed train ( he could have


missed train)

- she might not have broken with her boyfriend

ONE MORE THING YOU SOULD TO KNOW
“penggunaan CAN”
Dalam situasi tidak formal, kita boleh menggunakan “can”
untuk menggantikan semua modal verb. Namun,
walaupun diterima dalam konteks informal, sebaiknnya
gunakan modal verb yang terbaik dalam situasi yang
formal atau dalam mengerjakan tugas.

Request : Could you open the door please?


Asking for permission : may I use the phone?
Suggestion : we could meet next week!
Possibility : it may/might/could happen again.

GAP FILLING EXERCISE

Boy : (can) you speak german?


Girl : yes I (can). I (could) speak it fluently when we lived
in germany. Why do you ask?
Boy : I need this letter translated into german. Do you
think you (can) do it?
Girl : let me see…, yes I (might) be able to. It (could) take
a little time, though. And of course, I (might) need
dictionary too. (may) I borrow yours?
Boy : of course.. No wait, my sister (might) taken it. Let
me go and have a look… no it’s here, you (can) borrow
it

(could) have asked her.
Boy : she is on holiday at the moment, and this
(can’t) wait. I need it for tommorow.
Girl : I (might) not be able to do it for
tommorow. But I (can) do it for Wednesday.
Boy : wonderful… (could) you email it to me
when you have finished?
Girl : sure …
