TERMS
• There are several terms related terms associated with the
internet but in this presentation only a few will be
covered.
EMAIL

• Email, short for "electronic mail," is one of the most


widely used features of the Internet. It allows one to send
and receive messages to and from anyone with an email
address, anywhere in the world
SPAM

• Spam is the jargon name of unwanted and unwelcome email


or junk e-mail. Spam email comes in two main categories:
high-volume advertising, which is annoying, and hackers
attempting to lure you into revealing your passwords, which
is dangerous.

FILE TRANSFER PROTOCOL (FTP)

• The standard method for downloading and uploading files


over the Internet. With FTP, you can login to a server and
transfer files (meaning you can "send" or "receive" files).

SERVER

• A server is a computer with a software program set up for


serving web pages to a user on the same computer or
another computer. The server computer coupled with
server software, listens for requests from a client
computer (a computer other than the server).

TELNET

• A terminal emulation protocol (or Internet program) used to connect a


computer to a remote host or server. Telnet is one of the oldest Internet
activities and is primarily used to access online databases or to read articles
stored on university servers.

INTERNET RELAY CHAT (IRC)
• Stands for "Internet Relay Chat." IRC is a service that allows people to
chat with each other online. It operates on a client/server model where
individuals use a client program to connect to an IRC server.

• In order to join an IRC conversation, you must choose a username and a


channel. Your username, also called a handle, can be whatever you want.

INSTANT MESSAGING

• Instant messaging, or "IMing," as frequent users call it, has become a popular
way to communicate over the Internet. Two people with the same IM client
software can type messages back in forth in a private online chat session.
• Instant messaging can be a much more efficient way to communicate with
others than sending multiple e-mails back and forth.

WEB BROWSER

• A browser is a free software package or mobile app that displays


web pages, graphics, and most online content. Popular web
browsers include Chrome, Firefox, Internet Explorer, Microsoft
Edge, and Safari, but there are many others
• Browser software is specifically designed to convert HTML and
XML computer code into human-readable documents
• (Graded) – Give three web browsers other than above
WEB PAGE

• A web page is what you see in your browser when you are on the
internet
• Web pages can either be static or dynamic. Static pages show the
same content each time they are viewed. Dynamic pages have
content that can change each time they are accessed.
• Please note that a Web page is not the same thing as a Web site. A
Web site is a collection of web pages
SEARCH ENGINE

• Google, Bing, DuckDuckGO, Ask, Excite, and Yahoo are all


search engines. They index millions of sites on the Web, so that
Web surfers like you and me can easily find Web sites with the
information we want.
• Search engines can locate relevant Web sites when users enter
search terms or phrases. When you are looking for something
using a search engine, it is a good idea to use words like AND,
OR, and NOT to specify your search.
UNIFORM RESOURCE LOCATOR (URL)

• Uniform Resource Locators or URLs are the web browser addresses of


internet pages and files. With a URL, you can locate and bookmark specific
pages and files in your web browser.
• An example of a URL is http://www.google.com
HTML AND XML

• Hypertext Markup Language (HTML) is the programming


language of web pages. HTML commands your web browser to
display text and graphics in a specific fashion.
• XML is eXtensible Markup Language, is another programming
language used to build websites. 
SOCIAL MEDIA

• Social media is the broad term for any online tool that enables
users to interact with thousands of other users. Facebook and
Twitter are among the largest social networking sites

CAPTCHA

• A captcha is program used to verify that a human, rather than a


computer, is entering data. Captchas are commonly seen at the end
of online forms and ask the user to enter text from a distorted
image.
• "CAPTCHA," which is an acronym for "Completely Automated
Public Turing test to tell Computers and Humans Apart
