• Lettuce is the most important salad crops. It is a
native of Europe and Asia and introduced in India by
the Britishers.
• Lettuce is an annual and belongs to family composite.
The leaves and heads are used as salad. There are about
150 varieties, of which only about 20 are important.

• Bareilly is located in the northern part of India and
experiences a subtropical climate with hot summers
and cool winters. Lettuce is a cool- weather crop and
grows best in temperatures between 16-18°C.
• In Bareilly, lettuce can be grown during the winter
season from October to February when the
temperature ranges between 5-15°C.
• Lettuce requires well-drained soil with a pH of 6-
7.5, and it requires adequate water supply to grow. I

PROJECT DISCRIPTION
LETTUCE PRODUCTION (UNDER POLYHOUSE)
INTRODUCTION-

Lettuce is a salad crop grown commercially across the world. The demand for salad crop
increasing day by day due to their diet value and medicinal value. Lettuce is leafy vegetables
which can be consumed raw. Lettuce Plant are mainly in the green and red colour
spectrum. Lettuce plant can be grown in Greenhouse, Poly house and even hydroponically.
However proper business plan and farm management practise make the lettuce farming as
successful commercial business.

PRODUCTION TECHNOLOGY

The success of project will mainly depend on the adoption of innovative technology for
both production and post harvest management. Salient features of the production
technology that will be followed are outline below.
1. PROJECT LOCATION-

It is possible to establish a poly house in almost every location of our country &produce any
crop commercially inside it. Our location is Rural area in Bareilly. The location is chosen due
to land availability , near to market ,easy supervision of owner, high market demands ,
availability of skilled labour ,availability of raw material &planting material.

2. VARIETIES-

Butter head lettuce-White boston, big boston

Leaf type lettuce- slow bold, chinese yellow

NURSERY AND SEEDLING RAISING-

It can be sown directly in the field or by raising the nursery beds. In the nursery beds, the
seedlings are transplanted after 4-6 weeks of sowing. Seed are sown in the nursery bed in
September to October. We sow the seeds in seedbed at the depth of 0,17 inches (0,4-0,5).we keep
the soil moist

POLYHOUSE SHED -

The structural material, which will be used for poly house, is of G. I. pipes. The polythene film will
be
U.V. stabilized of 250-micron thickness. The poly film has to be replaced after 3 to 5 year. To
reduce
light intensity during summer, the shade net of 50% will be used and Lime will be painted on
the poly film.

GROWING BED AND SOIL STERILISATION-

Lettuce plants prefer plenty of sun and thrive in soil rich in nitrogen and humus. In most cases, we
plant lettuce leaving a distance of 8-12 inches (20-30 cm.) between plants and 20-23 inches (50-
60 cm.) between rows.

PLANTING METHOD-

The seeds are sown in the nursery bed from September to October. The seeds should be treated
with Ceresan (2q/kg seed). 1gm seeds produces 800-900 seedlings. About 500gm seeds are required
to transplant seedlings for one hectare. The seeds germinate 6 to 8 days after sowing. 5 to 6 weeks
old seedlings are transplanted. Depending on climate and soil the seedlings should be transplanted
at a spacing of 45 x 45cm or 45 x 30cm. For transplanting the soil should be prepared well by
incorporating 100-125 quintals of compost of F.Y.M., 80kg Nitrogen, 60kg Phosphorus and 60kg
Potash per hectare.

FERTLISER REQUIREMENT-

For getting good yield, 100-150q of well rotten Farm Yard Manure should be incorporated
during land preparation. Besides this apply 50 kg each of N and K2O and 90 kg of P2O5.

Entire quantity of Farm Yard Manure, P K and half nitrogen is applied in the field at the time of
field preparation. The remaining nitrogen is top dressed one month after first application at the
time of hoeing up.
DISEASE AND PEST CONTROL-

Aphid sucks cell sap resulting reduced in plant growth and quality which can be controlled by
spraying Dimecron (0.05%) and malathion (0.05%). Botrytis rot, Bacterial rot and mosaic diseases
also affecting lettuce plants. The rot is due to soil fungus and bacterial rot occurs during storage and
marketing. Mosaic is a virus disease and transmitted by Aphids.

HARVESTING AND YEILD-

Harvesting depends upon the type and the purpose for which it is grown. The leafy variety become
ready for harvesting within 50-60 days of sowing and harvested when the leaves attain full size but
remain tender.Head type variety takes 60-70 days to harvest. Heads are harvested when they attain
a good size and become solid.

For home consumption the lettuce leaves can be harvested at any time, but for market it is allowed
to develop a full size.

AVERAGE LETTUCE YEILD- 20-40 tons per hectare

POST HARVESTING HANDLING AND STORAGE-

Lettuce should be cooled after harvest to retain high quality and enhance shelf life. Lettuce can be
stored for about 3 to 4 weeks at 0oC with 90 to 95 % relative humidity and the freshness of lettuce is
maintained by the pre harvest spray of butaric acid at 5 to 10 ppm.

MARKET POTENTIAL-

Lettuce is widely consumed vegetable around the world, and it has a significant market potential.
The global lettuce market size was valued at USD 25.1 billion in 2020, and it is projected to reach
USD 34.3 billion by 2028, growing at a CAGR of 4.0% during the forecast period.

The demand for lettuce is driven by several factors, including its nutritional value, convenience, and
versatility in various culinary applications. Lettuce is low in calories and high in fibre, vitamins, and
minerals, making it a popular choice for health-conscious consumers. It is also a staple ingredient in
salads, sandwiches, wraps, and other dishes.

EXTENSION ACTIVITIES-

Starting a business of Lettuce cultivation under poly house needs proper planning and preparation.
Before starting few months training is advisable. In India training facilities & resources are
inadequate. Hence the project can also be used as a platform to give onsite or offsite training to
farmers of nearby localities, visits can be arranged on poly-house unit & they will be educated on
scientific lines regarding cultivation practices.
