Surface finishing

After making the product from any of the manufacturing

processes, one or more operations are required to produce a
desired surface. This is called as surface finishing operations. The
different surface finishing operations are:

•1. Electroplating
•2. Galvanization
•3. Anodizing

Surface finishing
• Principal reasons for finishing or coating a metal are to
• Provide corrosion protection
• Enhance product appearance (e.g., providing a specified color
or texture)
• Increase wear resistance and/or reduce friction of the surface
• Increase electrical conductivity
• Increase electrical resistance
• Prepare a metallic surface for subsequent processing
• Rebuild surfaces worn or eroded during service

ELECTROPLATING – STEPS
• Electroplating, also known as
electrochemical plating, is an electrolytic
process in which metal ions in an
electrolyte solution are deposited onto a
cathode work part.
• The setup is shown in Figure. The anode is
generally made of the metal being plated
and thus serves as the source of the plate
metal. Source: https://dokumen.tips/documents/penyepuhan-elektroplating.html

ELECTROPLATING – STEPS
• Direct current from an external power
supply is passed between the anode
and the cathode.

• The electrolyte is an aqueous solution

of acids, bases, or salts; it conducts
electric current by the movement of Source:https://www.thenaturalsapphirecompany.com/education/precious-

plate metal ions in solution.

• For optimum results, parts must be

chemically cleaned just prior to
electroplating.

ELECTROPLATING – STEPS
• It is a surface finishing process
• Metal is connected to positive side of DC
current
• Part is connected to the negative side of
DC current Source:https://www.thenaturalsapphirecompany.com/education/precious-
metal-manufacture-techniques-styles/precious-metal-jewelry-manufacture/

• Both components are immersed in

solution
• DC current is allowed to flow
• Slowly metal deposits on the cathode and
get good surface

GALVANIZATION – STEPS
• It is the process of coating Iron and Steel with Zinc
• A molten Zinc bath is prepared at temperature 4600C
• Steel or Iron parts are dipped in the bath
• It is done to increase corrosion resistance to Steel and Iron
• Zinc on the surface reacts with atmosphere and forms Zinc Carbonate
protection layer

ANODIZING – STEPS
• Anodizing is surface finishing process
• In this process metal is coated with Oxide layer
• It is used to increase corrosion and wear resistance
• Aluminium is put in the Sulphuric acid solution
• DC current is allowed to flow
• Alumininum Oxide layer forms on the surface
