territory and has passed from generation to generation.

century AD. To protect China from attacks from
Mongolia and Manchuria. Is one of the New Seven

makes it an important historical and cultural
testimony. The fortification is located on the
border with the Gobi desert (south of Mongolia)

autonomous regions and municipalities.

a punishment, a kind of disgrace to the skin.
The criminals were tattooed on their faces
and forced to live in exile, as outcasts.
• This practice is called Ci Pei in Chinese. Even
in today's modern China, tattoos are seen as
related to the underworld and triads in one
way or another, although this attitude is
slowly changing. Despite questionable
attitudes towards tattoos, there is evidence

emerging among today's Chinese youth.
