Making a Stand
Objectives:
1. Provide evidence to support opinions
2. Observe politeness at all times
Presentation
For every claim you make, you are required to
prove your point. Your opinions and genera-
lizations will need factual detail (evidence) to support them.
Those supporting details may come from a number of different
types of sources.
Discussion

considering? Whose opinions do you
value? Why? Whose opinions do you question? Why?

stings with its long…
Discussion
…tentacles which hang down from its body. The only way to
protect yourself from being stung is to wear a suit over your entire
body. I would rather see a large shark than a jellyfish swimming
near me!

Discussion
What is an opinion?
 An opinion refers to a personal belief. It re-
lates to how someone feels about something. Others may agree
or disagree with an opinion, but they cannot prove or disprove
it.
What is an evidence?
 An evidence is anything that you see, experience, read, or are
told that causes you to believe that something is true or has
really happened. An evidence is an information that comes
closest to the facts of a matter.
Discussion
Why should opinions be supported with evidence?
 Strong opinions may offend the reader, who may feel
differently about the issue or have a personal connection to
the opposing views. Opinions without supporting evidence can
compromise the strength and perceived validity of the paper’s
argument because such opinions
may overshadow other trustworthy
evidences.
Discussion
 In the selection below, analyze which is an opinion and the
evidence to this opinion. Answer
the given questions.

Maricel’s dad got a new job. They moved to a new house in a

new town. Maricel likes the new house. She thinks it is nice. Her
room has a window that looks out on the backyard. The bed and
dresser from the old house are in her new room. All her toys are in
her new room too. She likes her new room. She hopes she will
like her new school too.
Discussion
1. Why did Maricel and her family move to a new town?
2. Why do you think Maricel like her new room?
3. Identify the opinion and the evidences from the selection.

Making a Stand Based on Informed Opinion
 Did you have fun remembering your favorite advertisement?
Surely, you enjoyed answering the tasks and did a great job.

 Tell whether the featured movie/ television soap opera shows
real image or make – believe and why do you say so.

disagree with their judgement and why.
A. “Nothing will ever be the same again. Smoking gave me
throat cancer at the age of 39. Now I breathe through a hole in
my throat and I need a machine to speak. Quit smoking now,
before it’s too late.” -by Terrie H.

touches yours?

 By reading the following informed opinion do you think TV

commercials are useful in our everyday living?
 Surely, you are aware that there are a lot of useful
advertisements we see while watching television and even
surfing internet, right? This is very common to us Filipinos to
have a lot of opinions…
Discussion
…and disagreements about things. Opinions have been a part
of our lives from media, peer groups, internet, and everywhere.
 Same goes also in choosing a product.
How do you choose a product and its service? How do you
assess your idea to patronize it? We usually choose products
with good quality, affordable, accessible and nutri-
tious. Taking a stand of the products
is the right thing to do.
Discussion
 Now, were your choices and opinions affected by
advertisements in print, radio, television, or internet?
Certainly, people make a stand of their choices based on the
credibility of the products and thus, promote good values to
the people.
 An opinion is a judgment, view-
point, or statement that is not
conclusive, rather than facts
which are true statements.
 An informed opinion is a belief, judgment or way of
thinking about something based on information.
Discussion
 Making a stand on the informed opinion that you’ve seen and
heard is very important. You should always believe and stick
to your opinion and never be afraid to voice it. Everyone could
disagree or everyone could agree but neither determines its
validity.
 Here are the three main factors that highlight and help you
how to make a stand in an informed opinion:
1. Be aware of your own thoughts.
Your thoughts need an outlet. Your ideas…
Discussion
…and understanding, about anything are one part of the story,
one angle of perception. And this can happen when you let
others understand what is in your mind and initiate a
conversation, discussion or debate.
2. Bring out your inner confidence
Your thoughts and opinions need a voice, today or tomorrow.
And it is a slow process of building self- confidence. Talk about
your thoughts.
Don’t fear being judged and ridiculed,
you have the right to have an opinion, to…
Discussion
…reach a conclusion about any and every trivial issue. You
also get to learn, a wide range of things about which you
certainly did not have an idea till you open and bring out your
confidence.
3) Open your way to new experiences
Be open-minded. Try and explore new information, ideas,
knowledge, and discover an untraveled path of experiences.

and box one (1) evidence to support this opinion.
