How to be a good mentee
• Remember your mentor is a volunteer. Show your mentor you
appreciate their time by preparing for your meetings, and come with
questions, comments or articles to share. Define goals for meetings ahead
of time by knowing what you want to discuss and accomplish during your
meeting.
• Take action. If they’ve given you something to work on, make sure you
do that in time for your next session.
• Be open to receiving feedback. Your mentor is there to help you, and it is
their job to provide honest, sometimes critical feedback. Be ready to
receive their feedback, and then decide whether or not you want to take it.
If you disagree with them, examine your attitude.
Ways to practice English with your
mentor/mentee
• Mentor can ask mentee questions related to topics recently learnt.
(example: create a sentence using continuous tense/ Tell a story using
“could” and “couldn’t”)
• Practice speaking by asking questions (part 1 individual, part 2 & 3
group task). Provide feedback afterwards.
• Test your mentee by reading out questions and let your mentee try to
answer it
