Review
A truss
is a structure composed of slender
members joined together at their end
points
Benefit of truss structure:
- light
- easy to install
- able to withstand heavy load
- (what others?)

2
Assumptions for Design
All loadings are applied at the joints.
• weight of the members is neglected
• force supported by each member is
usually much larger than its weight

The members are joined together by

smooth pins.
• Frictionless
• The connections act as pins provided the
center lines of the joining members are
concurrent
The Method of Joints
To analyze or design a truss  determine the force in each of its members

Method of joint is based on the fact:

1. The entire truss  in equilibrium
2. Each of its joints is also in equilibrium.
Example 1
A simple truss structure is given force at joint B
= 500 N right direction. Fix support at joint A
and frictionless support at joint C.
Answer
1. Draw the free-body diagram of a joint having at least one
known force and at most two unknown forces• Use one of
the two methods described above for establishing the sense
of an unknown force.
2. Orient the x and y axes such that the forces on the free-
body diagram can be easily resolved into their x and y
components and then apply the two force equilibrium
equations and Solve for the two unknown member forces
and verify their correct sense.
3. Using the calculated results, continue to analyze each of
the other joints.
