Foundation Year
Each student’s final grade will be calculated based on the following :
1. Continuous assessment (50% of the final grade) 
2. Final assessment (50% of the final grade) 

1. Continuous assessment:
a) Oral Presentation (15%)
It will be a 20 minutes presentation, followed by a 20-minutes debate with the class.
b) Mid-term Examination: Quiz (20%)
c) Homework assignment (10%)
d) Class participation (5%)

2. Final assessment
Short Essay on one of the key topics covered in class (50%)
 
Oral Presentation Rubric
The Oral Presentation Rubric is used to grade your formal oral presentation.

1. Quality of the oral presentation (your delivery and speaking skills


adds to the presentation of the information)
2. Your presentation is the appropriate length
3. Your presentation has appropriate content and demonstrates
knowledge of the topic (Demonstration of full knowledge of the
subject with explanations and elaboration)
4. Your presentation contains relevant documentation sources
5. Your presentation uses relevant concepts effectively

6. Your presentation is well organized and structured (with a clear
narrative structure).
 Your presentation should contain a thesis that fully addresses the
research question
 Your presentation should include arguments and examples
 Your presentation is clearly expressed and persuasive

critical thinking and independent analysis

Desirable performance
The Written Paper Rubric is used to grade your written papers.

Your paper has a thesis, evidence is appropriate and supports the


material, and there demonstrates critical thinking and independent
analysis
Your paper is well organized and structured
Your paper uses appropriate general academic English and
content words
Your paper has sound sentence structure and prose, and has been
proofread
Your paper’s presentation, citations and length are appropriate

What is the “Middle East”?
The term, the “Middle East”, slipped into common use
after the First World War replacing other designations
such as the “Near East” but interpretation over its
extension has varied over time.

Today it is commonly understood to include the Arab


States of West Asia and North Africa (members of the
Arab League) and the non Arab states of Iran, Israel
and Turkey.
