COMMUNITY
• A Community is a place where people come together to
share common interests and resources.
• It is also a place where people solve problems together.
Most people think of communities as a
place or setting, or a suburb or city that
they live in. Communities are much more
than that. They are the very essence of how
we live and socialize with others. We have
our own personal communities, the
communities that we are a part of and the
communities that we associate with.
Communities are the building blocks
that allow us to make sense of the world
in which we live, participate and share
experiences. They provide a sense of
identity and purpose, a sense of being a
part of and belonging.
FUNCTIONS OF COMMUNITY
Communities are about caring and sharing. The idea of
"community" probably came about where people
gathered around a common area for their mutual benefit.
Sharing a language, customs, ideas, skills, goods and
services, or protection from enemies would be some of the
advantages in being a part of a group. Over the years the
idea of community has changed to accommodate different
things. While different definitions mean different things,
the idea is the same; that a group comes together or lives
together to share something that is of value to the
members of that community.
Different communities fulfill different needs:
• The spiritual community
• The family community
• The living community
• The recreational community
• The learning community
• The employment community
• The health community
• The internet community
It could be argued that the more communities that a person participates in, the
richer and more diverse the persons life will be.
Community Links

A community can be anything from a physical place where

geographically people connect, or via a virtual space such as
social media groups or private community platforms.
Communities bring like-minded people together with similar
characteristics and common interests. Every community operates
with specific boundaries to meet the needs of that community.
Having a sense of community

Having a sense of community embraces spirit, character,

image and pride and is a vital element of a healthy
community. It is a feeling that people within the community
matter to one another with a shared faith that their needs will
be met through commitment and togetherness. Being a part
of a community can make us feel as though we are a part of
something greater than ourselves.
Community as a Social System?

Community as a social system mean that members of the

same community are functionally related with each other. This
means they have their own role to play and they love doing
their work. All the part are linked with each other and they
make an integrated whole.
Community as a system has three sub-
system.
1. Economic subsystem.
2. Political Subsystem.
3. Social subsystem.
Economic subsystem.
• For knowing well about the economic sub-system of
a community, we will have to study its main
occupation, the wages, the mode of payment the
assets, expenditure pattern etc. What proportion of
the income is spent on food, housing, clothing,
education, health, etc.
• Represented by the general economic system, which
dictates the living standards within a community.
Political Subsystem.

Political word here signifies the concept of power.

Although power is a mental notion and it is real
which is used for some sections of the society. For
understanding the power structure following
questions have to be answered their answers will
give us an idea about the power structure of the
community.
Social Sub-System.
Everything covering non-economic and non-political
are covered in this heading. The social structure
referring marriage, family, religious beliefs, values,
etc. are some of the aspects to be studied.
COMMUNITY AS A SENSE OF
CONNECTEDNESS
Social connectedness is a sense of belonging to a
group, family, or community. It’s about the
relationships people have with each other and their
engagement with the broader community. Social
connection is an integral component of health and
well-being. 
COMMUNITY AS A SENSE OF
CONNECTEDNESS
A socially connected community is a place where everyone feels
like they belong. It’s where people know their neighbors and
everyone has the proper support to get involved, build
relationships and contribute to the creation of strong social
networks. It’s a place where spaces exist for people to gather with
friends and neighbours. It’s also a place where all planning and
strategic initiatives take social connectedness into account.
