Family Day is a public holiday in the
countries of Angola, Israel, South
Africa, Uruguay, Vanuatu, and
Vietnam; in the Australian; in
the Canadian provinces of
Albeta, British,
Ontario, Saskatchewan and soon New
Brunswick and Nova Scotia; in the
American states
of Arizona and Nevada; and as the
second day of Songkran in Thailand.
In 1993, in decision 47/237,
the United Nations General
Assembly decided to mark
May 15 every year as
International Day of Families
in order to raise our
awareness of family issues.

When President Ho Chi Minh was still alive,
he was very interested in family matters. He
once said that; "It is right to care about the
family because many public families
become a society, a good family makes a
good society, a good society makes a better
family, the nucleus of society is the family."

Following his words, our country always has


directives to protect family members. For
example, Directive 55-CT/TW on
strengthening the leadership of grassroots
Party committees at all levels in child
protection, care and education.

On May 4, 2001, the Prime Minister issued


Decision No. 72/2001/QD-TTg on
Vietnamese Family Day.
