DIFFERENCE BETWEEN ETHICS

and MORALITY

Ethics refers to rules provided by an external source, e.g., codes of

conduct in workplaces or principles in religions.

Morality is the mental disposition or characteristic of behaving in a

manner intended to produce morally good results.

 Concerned with the idea of what is good, based on five classical

considerations:

Pleasure, Happiness, Excellence,Creativity, Harmony

BARANCHES OF ETHICS
Meta-Ethics
Meta-Ethics Meta-ethics is a branch of analytical philosophy
that aims to study the nature, origin, structure, or
foundation of moral or ethical words like “right”, “wrong”,
“good”, “bad”, “ought”, etc.

Itis the second-order philosophy and in this regard, it takes a

neutral stand whatsoever. Because it is not concerned with
an explanation of “what is a good action” instead it aims to
enquire into the meaning or the nature of good. That is, what
exactly are people doing when they use moral words such as
“good” and “right”?

Example: Abortion is wrong

NORMATIVE ETHICS
 Normative ethics seeks to set norms or standards for conduct. The
term is commonly used in reference to the discussion of general
theories about what one ought to do, a central part of Western
ethics since ancient times. Normative ethics continued to occupy
the attention of most moral philosophers during the early years of
the 20th century.

 Example: Not queue-jumping. Not lying. Not cheating. Stopping

at red lights. Paying taxes. Showing up to work on time. You
should return your shopping cart to the cart corral
APPLIED ETHICS
 Applied ethics refers to the practical aspect of moral
considerations. It is ethics with respect to real-world actions and
their moral considerations in the areas of private and public life,
the professions, health, technology, law, and leadership.

For example, the bioethics community is concerned with

identifying the correct approach to moral issues in the life
sciences, such as euthanasia, the allocation of scarce health
resources, or the use of human embryos in research.
Medical ethics, business ethics, engineering ethics, and the like are
all branches of applied ethics.
For example, is it ethical for a business owner to bluff during
negotiations with another company? Or, is it morally permissible
for a doctor to engage in mercy killing when a terminal cancer
patient begs to be put out of her misery?
MORAL AND NON-MORAL RULES STANDARD
Moral standards pertain to the rules people have about
the kinds of actions they believe are morally right and
wrong, as well as the values they place on the kinds of
objects they believe are morally good and morally bad.
Examples: Moral Duties:
Treat others as we want to be treated. Be merciful and
compassionate to others. Respect parents, elders and
people in authority. Take care of the children. Take care
of parents in their old age. Assist the elderly, sick and
injured. To help the needy. Keep promises. Be
responsible. Be fair. Be loyal Be thankful. Be humble.
Be courteous and kind in dealing with others.
Be courteous and kind in dealing with others. Be tolerant of
different people and their opinions. Give priority to children,
pregnant women and the elderly during emergencies. Be a good
neighbor. Dress neatly and decorously. Respect the law and the
rules of citizen coexistence.Wait our turn.Take care of public goods.
Avoid conflicts of interest, that is, do not expose yourself to
situations that incite us to corruption. Report injustice. Pay debts
and taxes.Respect the national symbols. Vote.
Moral Prohibitions
Examples:

Don’t do to others what you don’t want them to do to you. Do

not steal. Do not kill. Not deceive. Don’t slander people. Don’t
gossip about others. Do not have extra-marital relations. Do not
take justice into our hands.Don’t hit women. Don’t mistreat
children.

Non-moral standards refer to rules that are unrelated to moral

or ethical considerations. Either these standards are not
necessarily linked to morality or by nature lack ethical sense.
Basic examples of non-moral standards include rules of
etiquette, fashion standards, rules in games, and various house
rules.
