Learning Objective

To identify steps in the research

process.
Steps in The Research Process
1. Initial or preliminary search of related scientific
literature and observations or visits to research
centers.
3 areas/categories that can help you think of a
problem:
1. people
2. places
3. things
 Guidelines in Choosing a Research Topic
1. Interest
2. Feasibility of R in terms of:
a. expense
b. time constraint
c. availability of materials
d. existing skills and knowledge of the
investigator
e. hazard/ risks involved
3. Originality/ Novelty
4. Likelihood obtaining knowledge or
contributing to the growth of science
 5. Definite, specific and well-defined
scope
 6. Quantitative measurements
 7. Testable hypotheses
2. Identification/ selection of a research
problem.
3. Formulation of hypothesis: divide main
problem into sub-problems
4. Further search/review of related
scientific literature.
5. Writing of a research design/ research proposal.

3A. Tuba-Tuba (Jatropha curcas) Leaves as E.coli (Echerichia coli) Indicator in Water

The study aims to the answer the following questions:

Main Prob: Determine changes in tuba-tuba leaves in detecting the presence of
E.coli in water.
Sub-Prob: 1. How does tuba-tuba react to the presence of E.coli in H2O?
Ho: Tuba-tuba leaves (Jatropha curcas) cannot be an E.coli (Echerichia coli) in
water.
Ha: Tuba-tuba leaves (Jatropha curcas) can be an E.coli (Echerichia coli) in water.
Observations showed that the test tube with E.coli treated with tuba-tuba, exhibites
signs of color change (from green to brown) in a short period of time. The plant showed
relative effects as to that of the post test.
The study underwent on experimental method since the procedure required a process
of experimentation and through observation of corresponding results from the set-ups.
The researcher moved to accept Ha.
Research is a process that requires
patience and thought. There is no check list
to make certain you have exhausted every
resource and found the best research, it is
more of an art rather than a science. There
are steps that you must take.
