ACI CERTIFICATION
FIELD TESTING TECHNICIAN GRADE-1 ACI Publication CP-1 (09)
By: RONALD C. RABO, CE
ACI CERT. # 01194639
Prepared by: Engr. Ronald C. Rabo 1
SCOPE OF CFTT-1 The program requires a working knowledge of the following ASTM standards: C 172 – Sampling freshly mixed concrete C 1064 - Temperature of freshly mixed Portland- cement concrete C 143 – Slump of hydraulic cement concrete C 138 – Unit weight, yield, and air content (Gravimetric) of concrete C231 – Air content of freshly mixed concrete by pressure method C 173 – Air content of freshly mixed concrete by the volumetric method C 31 – Making and curing concrete test specimens in the field Prepared by: Engr. Ronald C. Rabo 2 CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: 1.) A passing grade on the ACI written examination The one-hour written examination is "closed book" and consists of 55 multiple choice questions. There are five (5) to ten (10) questions on each of the ASTM standards. To pass the written examination, both of the following conditions must be met: (a) at least 60% correct for each of the required standards; and (b) a minimum score of 70% overall.
Prepared by: Engr. Ronald C. Rabo 3
CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: 2.) Successful completion of the ACI performance examination.
The performance examination is also "closed book" and
requires actual demonstration of six of the required ASTM standards plus a verbal description of sampling, ASTM C 172. The examinee is judged on his/her ability to correctly perform or describe all of the required procedures for each standard.

ASTM C 172 – Sampling … Sample size = f(max. aggregate size) For strength test = 1 ft3 (28 li) min. For routine tests = smaller volume Notes: take sample after all water & admix (if any) with larger aggregate size, conduct wet- seiving (before remix) Do not re use any portion of the composite sample except temperature test

ASTM C 172 – Sampling … Equipment Procedure Composite sampling (2 or more portions at regular intervals) Stationary mixers Repeatedly passing receptacle Diverting discharge Composite sampling (at least 5 different portions after discharge) Paving mixers - Preclude contamination by 3 shallow containers on subgrade Composite sampling (2 or more portions at regular intervals) Truck mixers or Repeatedly passing receptacle agitators Diverting discharge Note: regulate discharge by rate of revolution, NOT by size of gate opening
