The text entitled 'Advertise your business' is a
part of lecture written in 1882. In this lecture, Barnum reveals the ways for success in Business. Here are some tips offered by the writer in order to get success in business. A. Be polite and kind to your costumers Politeness and kindness are the best capital which should be invested in business. Large store, attractive advertisements and shining signs might prove to be weak in comparison to polite and kind behavior shown to the costumers. We should behave in the same way we want to be treated by other people. If a business person treats his costumers with bad manner or impolite voice then the shinning advertisements and large store becomes worthless and the person will end up loosing the trust of customer. B. Be charitable : Even though our motive in business is to earn profit, we should be ready to help others. It is said that the more we share the more we get. Be liberal and charitable to the costumers. The business owner should think of helping other who are really in need. In doing so not only they will help them for their better life but also it will be a great advertisement of their politeness to other. Charity means giving other something when they are in need. But don't fall in to practice of giving blessing to a person who needs potato. C. Don't blab : Our policy of business is that we should not reveal the secrets behind the success of our business. We should say nothing about profits hopes, expectations and intentions that we have towards our business. Be caution and don't tell about the loss that the business has have suffered from unsystematic business routine, it will be the cause of loss of reputation. D. Preserve your integrity : Preserving your reputations and honesty is equally important in the field of business. It is more precious than expensive rubies and diamonds. Honesty is the best policy. A man may look polite and pleasant but if he losses the trust and honesty, he cannot earn money forever. A liar or a cheater cannot enjoy peace and joy in business. We may differ in terms of our views, opinions, ideas and experiences, however we should be sincere and honest while conducting our business. The company man - Ellen Goodman The Company Man" is a satirical essay written by Ellen Goodman that was first published in The Boston Globe in 1980. In the essay, Goodman uses the story of Phil, a typical corporate executive, to critique and satirize the values and lifestyle of the corporate world. Goodman begins by introducing Phil, a man who has dedicated his life to his job and to climbing the corporate ladder. She describes how Phil works long hours, sacrifices his personal life and relationships, and puts the needs of the company above his own. Despite his sacrifices, Phil is ultimately unfulfilled and unhappy, and Goodman suggests that this is because he has sacrificed his own values and identity for the sake of his job. Throughout the essay, Goodman uses humor and satire to mock the values of the corporate world and the people who inhabit it. She suggests that the corporate culture values success and material wealth above all else, and that it is often ruthless and cutthroat. Goodman also portrays the corporate world as being shallow and superficial, where people are judged based on their appearance and status rather than their character and abilities. Ultimately, Goodman concludes that the corporate world is a soul-crushing and unfulfilling place, and that it is important for people to find meaning and fulfillment in their lives outside of work. Light my Lucky R. Scholes - N.R Comley - G.L Ulmer This is a discussion of a “Lucky Strike” Cigarette ad. It points out how clever the ad is and how important it is for consumers to learn how to make a critical scrutiny (review) of ads or any text made for promotional purposes. Writers describe an advertisement for Lucky Strike cigarette. Cigarettes ads are cleverly presented. The ad looks very simple. It presents a photo of a young, healthy woman, holding an unlighted cigarette in a hand that rests on her head. She is outdoors perhaps suggesting cigarettes can be smoked openly . The words “Light My Lucky” appear in quotation marks perhaps she says this or wants. At the bottom of the photo, there is a surgeon general’s warning: “Smoking by Pregnant Women May Result in Fetal Injury, Premature Birth, and Low Weight.” The writers examine the meaning of light and surgeon warning. The word light gives two meanings. It is used in a punning way in the ad. One meaning is fire and another is weightless (opposite to heavy). If we take the word light as fire, it is metaphorically suggesting for sex. Similarly, if we relate the meaning of light with weightless then it means the cigarette is very useful, free from bad ingredients, light cigarettes have less tar and nicotine. The “light” in Light My Lucky thus refers to both the sexual approach and the healthiness of the light cigarette. Similarly, the Surgeon’s warning is so tricky, that it only warns pregnant women effects of taking Lucky Strike cigarettes. It means others will not be affected by smoking it. The ad thus shows metonymic associations of the cigarette with beauty, health, and erotic pleasures. This is an extremely clever and well-made ad. Consumers simply come under the influence of pictures and words. They may easily believe that taking Light Strike cigarettes is a symbol of dignity and splendor THANK YOU PREPARED BY : Siddhanta acharya Jalpa k.c ( Group leader) Riya rana Pooza pant Prakriti thapa Sharmila pun
