DEFINITION
The knocking down of buildings to clear the
ground
 Includes other works such as:
 Dismantling of parts of structures
 Removal of walls etc.

DEMOLITION
 Similar to other types encountered in
construction work:
 Premature collapse of structures
 Work at height
 Paint and machinery
 Contact with live overheads
 Dust
 Explosives
 Noise and vibration
 Contact with buried services
CONTINUE WITH HAZARDS
 Asbestos
 Movement of vehicles
 Hazardous substances from previous use of

buildings
 Biological hazards
 Manual handling
 Sharp objects including glass and nails from

the demolition, or syringes left by trespassers


CONTROLS AND PRECAUTIONERY
MEASURES
 Elimination or control of work at height
 Structural assessment of the strength and

stability and adjacent structures; propping


and supporting may be necessary to prevent
collapse.
 Disconnection of services( eg. Gas, electricity,

water)
 Damping down with water spray to reduce

dust creation
CONTINUE WITH CONTROLS
 Securing site with fencing or hoardings to
create a buffer zone and exclude unauthorized
people.
 Assessing the strength and stability of floors to
ensure that plant, machinery and debris put on
those floors do not exceed their tolerance.
 Careful assessment and planning of the work
to eliminate hazards where possible eg.
Selecting a demolition method that keeps
workers away from immediate area .
