Movement Advocated

marathi speaking state
in western India from
1956-1960.
 Bombay as capital.
 Continued to advocate
for inclusion of marathi
speaking areas in
northern part.
Background
 Before independence
the Indian national
Congress pledged to
introduce linguistic
states.
 British denied and
merged regions.
 Wide spread public
demand for
amendment of the bill.
Causes of Movement
 Jawaharlal Nehru and
Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel
against linguistic states.
 Congress under pressure
by the wealthy business
community.
 Strong local demand for
formation of
Maharashtra.
 Morarji worked as oil on
fire.

Formation of Samyukta Maharashtra
 Movement
On 6th Feb 1956 Samyukta
Maharashtra was formed.
 Under leadership of Keshavrao
Jedhe.
 Acharya Atre, Prabodhankar
Thackeray, Senapati Bapat, SA
Dange and Shahir Amar Shaikh as
active members.
 Executive council declared the
president Sripad Amrit Dange, Vice
President Dr. T.R. Naravane,
General Secretary S.M. Joshi.
 General Election 1957 Samiti
defeats Congress.
 Congress agreed to the demands.
Significance of Hutatma Chowk
 Important landmark located in Fort area of
Mumbai.
 Flora fountain was built in 1864 in honour
of Flora, the Roman Goddess.
 106 Protesters were gunned down by police.
 Flora fountain was renamed as Hutatma
Chowk ot Martyr's Square.
 The memorial depicts two Martyrs an urban
labourer and a farmer-holding a torch
together.
 Second largest party in Maharashtra- The
Shetkari Kamgar Paksh, was keen that in
the labour movement farmers shouldn't be
sidelined.
 Hutatma Chowk placed to reorient the
symbolic geography of the city.
