Introduction

• Chlorpheniramine is an antihistamine medication


used to treat allergy symptoms.

• It is a first-generation antihistamine, blocking the


effects of histamine released during an allergic
reaction.
Classification

Traditionally, H1 antihistamines have been classified into 6 chemical groups:


Mechanism of Action

Chlorpheniramine binds to the histamine H1


receptor. This blocks the action of endogenous
histamine, which subsequently leads to
temporary relief of the negative symptoms
brought on by histamine.
Indications

It is used for the treatment of -

• Rhinitis,
• Urticaria,
• Allergy,
• Common cold,
• Asthma and
• Hay fever.
Dosage and Administration

Usual Adult Dose for Allergic Rhinitis -

• 4 mg oral tablets: 1 tablet orally every 4 to 6 hours


Maximum dose: 6 tablets per 24 hours

• 12 mg extended release tablets : 1 tablet every 12 hours


Maximum dose: 2 tablets per 24 hours

• 2 mg/ 5 mL syrup: 10 mL orally every 4 to 6 hours


Maximum dose: 6 doses per 24 hours
Side Effects

Common side effects -

• Feeling sleepy during the daytime,


• Feeling sick (nausea),
• Feeling dizzy or difficulty concentrating,
• Dry mouth,
• Headaches and
• Blurred vision.
