Drugs for dry cough


Cough

• Cough is normal physiological reflex action to irritants in larynx ,trachea or in

bronchus

• Its not a disease but symptom of diseases.

• Dry cough need to be suppressed

• Productive cough need to promoted


Codeine  

• It is an opioid, selective agonist for the mu opioid receptors.

• Codeine suppresses the cough reflex through a direct effect on the


cough center in the medulla.

• Side effects : unusual lightheadedness, severe drowsiness/dizziness,


difficulty waking up
Dextromethorphan 

• It is an NMDA receptor antagonist used to treat cases of dry cough.

• It causes dissociate hallucinogen

• A dextromethorphan overdose may present as nausea, vomiting,


stupor, tachycardia.

• Overdose should be managed through symptomatic and supportive


measures.
Antihistamines
• CHLORPHENIRAMINE
• It is a histamine-H1 receptor antagonist indicated for the management
of symptoms associated with upper respiratory allergies.
• Common side effects
• feeling sleepy during the daytime.
• feeling dizzy or difficulty concentrating.
• dry mouth.
• headaches.
• blurred vision.
