The following extract shows Annabeth (the protagonist) entering the maze in search of the mark of Athena
where she stumbles into an architecturally unstable underground chamber
Extract - “The room’s ceiling was barrel-shaped with bricked arches, but Annabeth didn’t like the look of the
supporters. Directly above her, on the arch nearest to the bricked-in doorway the capstone was bricked in half.
Stress fractures ran across the ceiling. The place had probably been intact for 2000 years, but she decided she
rather she’d rather not spend too much time here. With her luck, it would collapse in the next two minutes”.
Effect - The instability of the architecture shown through Annabeth's discomfort of the state of the ceiling
brings an atmosphere of danger due to the risk of the ceiling collapsing at any moment. The place is also quite
ancient which explains the state of the chamber. The probability of a perilous event happening is increased,
hence creating more suspense and drama which can be appealing to the reader.
Harry Potter And The Chamber of Secrets
Chamber of Secrets - Chapter XVII, pg 323
This is the part where Harry Potter (the protagonist) enters the Chamber of Secrets, in search of Ginny Weasley
and finds the perpetrator of the basilisk attacks in Hogwarts.
Extract - “He was standing at the end of a very long, dimly lit chamber. Towering stone pillars entwined with
more carved serpents rose to support a ceiling lost in darkness, casting long, black shadows through the odd,
greenish gloom that filled the place. His heart beating very fast, Harry stood listening to the chill silence.”
Effect - The blackness of the chamber created an atmosphere of unpredictability which is enhanced by the
dimly lit environment. Moreover, the odd, greenish gloom created a sense of suspense and mystery because
gloom usually means total or partial darkness. Lastly, the chambers are shown as a desolate place due to the
lack of sound which is described as a ‘chill silence’.
Harry Potter And The Half-Blood Prince
Half-Blood Prince - Chapter XXVI, pg 463
In this part of the story Harry Potter and Albus Dumbledore have learned the location of one of Voldemort's
Horcruxes and are trying to gain access to the chamber which contains the Horcrux.
Extract - "The fissure soon opened into a dark tunnel that Harry could tell would be filled with water at high
tide. The slimy walls were barely three feet apart and glimmered like wet tar in the passing light of
Dumbledore’s wand. A little way in, the passageway curved to the left and Harry saw that it extended far into
the cliff. He continued to swim in Dumbledore’s wake, the tips of his benumbed fingers brushing the rough, wet
rock. "
Effect - This extract creates a sense of anticipation, danger, and uncertainty as Harry and Dumbledore venture
deeper into the tunnel, facing potential obstacles and revelations such as the slippery rock and narrow space
which can be injurious due to the rough walls. The vivid descriptions enhance the reader's immersion in the
scene, heightening the suspense and building excitement for what lies ahead in their quest.
