Introduction
THE 1957-1958 INFLUENZA PANDEMIC ,ALSO KNOW AS
ASIAN FLU ,IT WAS A INFLUENZA PANDEMIC CAUSED
BY AN OUTBREAK OF INFLUENZAVIRUS A H2N2 THAT
STARED IN CHINA
Id had a high mortality ,with estimates of around 1 millon
people died from the pandemic
China passed approximately in the month of april of that year
to Hong Kong and Singapure ,from where it spread to India
and Australia.During the month of May and June the virus
spread throughout the east .In July and august it went to
Africa and later to Europe and United States between
October and November 10 less than 10 months the virus
reached a worldwide distribution
The World Health Organization (WHO) ordered all laboratories to create a
vaccine in record time, a vaccine was created but distribution was limited

THE SYMPTOMS OF ASIAN FLU
HIGH COUGHT FATIGUE
TEMPERATURE

MUSLE PAINS SORE THROAT HEADACHE

How it manifests in people

The 1957 outbreak was associated with

variation isease susceptibility and
course .While some infeted people
experienced only minor bsymtoms ,such as
cought complications such as
pneumonia.People who were not inffected
by the virus were believed to possess
protective antibodies against otjer closely
related influenza in strains
Transmission
The transmission of the asian flu are: By direct
contact with a sick person or contaminated material,
for example, through the hands. By air, by
respiratory drops released by coughing or sneezing

The rapid spread of the pandemic was due to two

factor
.The increased speed of international transport and
flights
.The mutation suffered by the virus
The most affected italy and spain

It arrived in Spain,Bilbao at the beginning of October

1957 and affected, in less than a month, more than a
third of its 267,000 inhabitants. It was a disease
Asian flu epidemic affects a quarter of the population
of Italy and forces the closure of schools, reduces
industrial activities and is even threatening football
matches. The Ministry of Public Health estimated 13
million of the 53 million inhabitants of Italy who suffer
from the disease
Recommendations
Not having contact with poultry
and wild birds. control access of
personnel and equipment.
cleaning and disinfection of
unknown birds. declare cases of
disease and death of birds.
Discard dead bird manure
Virus incubation

Asian flu was a highly contagious

disease caused by a virus that
causes respiratory symptoms.
The incubation period is 48 hours
with a variation of one and seven
days.
Influenza A H2 N2

The 1957 outbreak was caused by virus know as the

influenza A H2N2 subtype . Research has indicated that this
virus is a regrouped strain ,originating from avian influenza
strains in the 1960 the human H2N2 strain underwent a
series of mirror genetic modifications a process know as
antigenic drift
These slight modifications a produced periodic epidemics
After 10 years of evolution ,the 1957 influenza virus
disappeared and was replacedby on antigenic change with
influenza A H3 N3 subtype
HOW IS H2N2 FORMED

The H2 N2 virus contains three

different genes from the H2N2 virus
that originated froman avian influenza
A virus ,which includes hemaggutinin
H2 and neuraminidase
