Measures of Central

Tendency
Mean, Median, Mode
LESSON OBJECTIVES

1. Define mean, median, and mode.

2. Calculate the measures of central

agenda tendency for ungrouped data using mean,

median, and mode.

3. Use measures of central tendency to

compare data sets.
Let’s have fun first!
What is
Central Tendency?
 the statistical measure that identifies a single
value as representative of an entire distribution.

 It aims to provide an accurate description of the

entire data. It is the single value that is most
typical/representative of the collected data.

MEASURES OF CENTRAL TENDENCY
 Mean
 Median
 Mode

Measures of Central Tendency 5

Mean
 the average of the given numbers and is
calculated by dividing the sum of given
numbers by the total number of numbers.

Mean 6
Median
• The middle number; is found by ordering all data points and
picking out the one in the middle (or if there are two middle
numbers, taking the mean of those two numbers).

Median 7
Mode
• The most frequent number — that is, the number that
occurs the highest number of times.
• number that appears the most

Mode 8
Let’s find mean, median, and mode!

Let’s compare these sets.

15,27,15,26,37,37,39

78,79,75,76,76,74,73

Take home activity…
Answer the following questions.
1. What is the mean, median, and mode of the following numbers? 10, 39, 71, 39, 76, 38, 25
2. What measure of central tendency is calculated by adding all the values and dividing the sum by
the number of values?
3. The front row in a movie theatre has 23 seats. If you were asked to sit in the seat that occupied the
median position, in which seat would you have to sit?
4. The mean of four numbers is 71.5. If three of the numbers are 58, 76, and 88, what is the value of
the fourth number?
5. What number would you divide by to calculate the mean of 3, 4, 5, and 6?
